This unit introduces students to the major
categories of information ethics. It covers
ethical dilemmas that most commonly confront
information professionals. It also look more in
depth at public policy, economic, and legal
issues surrounding the provision of information
and library services. It looks also in “Nine P’s”:
principles include participation, people,
profession, privacy, piracy, protection, power
and policy. In particular, it focuses on issues
such as intellectual freedom, equitable access
to information, privacy, intellectual property,
and internet and computer crimes
3. COURSE AIM
This unit introduces students to the major categories of ethics of information society. It covers
ethical dilemmas that most commonly confront Librarians or Information Professionals. It
focuses on issues such as intellectual freedom, equitable access to information, privacy, and
intellectual property
4. COURSE OBJECTIVES









Understand the concept of information ethics as related to the concept of digital
information society
Develop knowledge with regard to the technological dimensions in the information
society and ethical issues emerging
Know the basics of professional ethics.
Know, be able to apply and analyse the ALA Code of Ethics
Know, be able to apply and analyse Information System Crimes Law and regulations in
Oman
Understand privacy concerns.
Be able to analyse and provide reasoned responses to ethical dilemmas
Explore ethical issues related to digital information society.
Investigate the nature and level of information ethics education in LIS
5. COURSE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students completing this course should be able to:




Recognize the philosophical assumptions that are embedded in Information ethics ideas
and in philosophical works in order to define ones moral or ethics responsibility in
contemporary society.
Reflect on and evaluate ethical arguments and various issues in Information ethics in
order to communicate effectively with others who might have a different opinion from
one's own.
Recognize the importance of information ethics issues include Nine P’s”: principles
which are participation, people, profession, privacy, piracy, protection, power and policy
in Arabic society, particularly in Oman.
Understand the role of information institutions and professionals in such issues

‫‪Attendance‬‬
‫‪Attendance at class is mandatory. Course Instructors should keep attendance records. An‬‬
‫‪"absentee warning notice" will be issued if a student is absent for:‬‬
‫‪• More than 10% in courses with less than 75 total contact hours.‬‬
‫‪• More than 5% in courses with 75 or more total contact hours.‬‬
‫‪An "absentee withdrawal notice" will be issued and the student will be deemed to have‬‬
‫‪withdrawn from the course with an 'FW' grade if a student is absent for:‬‬
