Elective Report Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia Done by: Khalid AbdulRahman Mohammed AlRisi Introduction: Following a pleasant and uneventful 7 hour flight, we arrived at Kuala
lumpur, Malaysia on 8th of may 2009. Malaysia is extremely diverse with
respect to both landscape and culture. This beautiful country contains many
different beautiful places. Also the fact that Malaysia is a tropical area makes
it full of many tropical diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. These
facts made our elective posting very interesting and exciting.
Kuala lumpur is home of many fully equipped teaching hospitals in
Malaysia. Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) -where I did my
elective- is one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Malaysia. The structure
and standard of clinical training is somehow similar to Oman.
The objectives of the elective: The main objective of our elective posting was to gain knowledge about
diseases that are uncommon in my home country. Also to observe and
develop existing clinical skills and to understand the relationship between
medicine and society in another culture. This includes developing an
understanding of medical ethics and law, the recognition of medical problems
facing different groups within another society, the financing of medical care,
and the role of government in healthcare in these countries.
The program: Our program was as follow:
•
•
Obstetrics and gynecology: 3 weeks from 11th of May to 31st of May
2009.
Emergency medicine: 5 weeks from 1st of June to 29th of June 2009.
In the first 3 weeks we were in the Obstetrics and Gynecology
department. In this department our timetable was arranged to different do
things during the week. The department is arranged in different teams, each
one was managed by one professor and 2 senior specialists. I joined the red
team. Every morning we attended the round which was very useful. The round
took about one hour. After the round, some of the doctors went to the clinic
and some of them went to the delivery ward. Most of the time we attended the
clinic with the supervisor who showed us many different cases in gynecology.
We attended the delivery ward many times and it was a nice experience.
At the end of 3rd week the supervisor evaluated us and she gave us
some advices about the future career.
I spent the next five weeks in the emergency department. There I met a
lot of Arabic people who are working and studying in this department. In the
first day we met the supervisor (Dr. Ahmed Khaldun) and the head of
department (Prof. Ismail Saiboon) and we discussed the objectives of our
posting at this department.
The experience at this department was totally different. We attended
many lectures and session for the postgraduate doctors who are doing their
master degree. We attended many sessions in Basic life support (BLS) and
advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Also one professor invited us to attend
some lectures for the undergraduate students in trauma and emergency
medicine. In the department we saw a huge number of different acute cases.
Also we attended resuscitation of patients many times. At the end of the
posting, the supervisor and the head of department asked me to present a
presentation for the staff, so I presented a presentation about Oman. Then the
supervisor evaluated me and also he gave me some advices.
Conclusion: In conclusion, I had a fantastic eight weeks in Malaysia full of study and
experience. I saw many florid signs and different diseases. Also, I learnt a lot
about Malaysian culture and ways of life of Southeast of Asia. Also I
developed my skills in clinical practice. I hope that I have another chance to
visit another country
