Friday, October 29 7:00 PM Schneebeck Concert Hall Sons/Ancestors Players of Sacramento State University presents an original performance of “NEW BLACK MATH” -- An essay by Suzan-Lori Parks Directed by Dr. Melinda Wilson Sons/Ancestors Players Ensemble Members: Tiffany Barrett, Stephanie Cochrane, Urias Davis, Ure Egbuho, Nupeir Garrett, Kamra Jacobs, Lindsey Molineaux, Breayanna Robinson, Brittany Sims, & Michael Smith. The play “New Black Math” is Susan Lori-Parks’ answer to Harry Elam’s December 2005 question in Theatre Journal. As editor, Elam asked several prominent theatre makers and scholars, “What is a Black Play?” Elam will be part of our conversation following the play. Following the performance is the premiere of a documentary on the founding of the Black Student Union and Black Studies at Puget Sound and followed by a conversation on the state of Ethnic Studies, 40 years and counting, in this—our—critical moment of contested identities and forms of knowledge, from Washington to Texas, Arizona, and beyond. (Performance contains strong and offensive language and challenging social themes. Do not take photos of or video the performance.)
