For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, Sept. 29, 2006 Civil Rights Leader to address Cameron The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, comprised of Cameron faculty and staff, Cameron Campus Ministry and community leaders, is pleased to announce that Joseph Lowery, the former Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, has been selected to speak at the 2007 annual MLK celebration. The festivities will be held Jan. 15 at Cameron University. “This event will celebrate the life, work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said committee member Sarah Janda, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of history. “We are thrilled to have Joseph Lowery on campus to speak about his experience and what progress has been made in the civil rights arena.” Lowery will present a discussion at 2 p.m. at the University Theatre on CU’s main campus in Lawton. He will also present his speech, ““Everything Has Changed, Nothing Has Changed: Our Progress in the Fight for Social Justice” at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet at 6:30 p.m. at the CU Fitness Center during the celebration. Lowery is one the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and helped lead the organization for more than 20 years. Economic empowerment was a major component of his administration. Recent achievements include covenants with a restaurant chain and a grocery chain that resulted in millions invested in the black community, expanded management opportunities, increased black owned franchises, ventures with black vendors and increased utilization of black technicians and professionals.
