For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, April 13, 2006 Cameron University’s celebration of Mathematics Awareness Month has right equation for fun One student organization plus five days of great activities equals one fun event. To celebrate Mathematics Awareness Month (April), Cameron’s student organization, Mathcom, along with CU’s departments of mathematical sciences and computing and technology, have planned a week of activities, beginning Monday, April 17. This year’s theme is Mathematics and Internet Security. “When you use your home computer to log onto your bank account and pay a bill, to buy a book off of the Internet, or to sell something on eBay, you assume your personal details – social security number, passwords, credit card numbers – cannot be read by an unauthorized third party,” said Karla Oty, Ph.D., chair of the mathematical sciences department. “What makes this possible is mathematics.” On Monday, April 17, Mathcom students will host a poster presentation, a book sale, and free food from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outside of Burch Hall on CU’s main campus in Lawton. Tuesday has been designated as Putnam and Mathcom day. From 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Burch Hall Room 208, there will be a presentation on the history of the Putnam Exam, as well as a presentation of t-shirts to those students who participated in the exam. A reception will follow the presentation. The fun will continue on Wednesday. There will be a panel presentation on Internet Security from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Burch Hall Room B026. The panelists will be Feridoon Moinian, associate professor in CU’s department of computing and technology, Mary Penick, assistant professor in the department of computing and technology, and Greg Duncan, Unix System Administrator, in Information Technology Services. (over) Mathcom, ADD ONE Also on Wednesday, Mathcom will host a movie night at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Building. In keeping with this year’s theme, the movie will be The Net, starring Sandra Bullock. The week will conclude with initiation ceremonies for honor societies in mathematics and computer science. The initiation ceremony for Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, will be held from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, in Burch Hall Room B026. Seven students will be inducted. Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the computing honor society, will have its initiation ceremony from 4 to 5 p.m. the following afternoon in Burch Hall B026. Three students will be inducted into this honor society.
