Cameron to purchase state-of-the-art microscope

Students and faculty of the Cameron University Department of Biological Sciences will soon have a stateof-the-art microscope at their fingertips.

Cameron will buy an epifluorescent stereomicroscope soon. The microscope will be purchased through money Cameron received from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) as part of the

National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant directed by Dr. Frank Waxman.

OUHSC was awarded a $17 million grant to fund biomedical research, and has given a portion of the grant to Cameron and 13 other Oklahoma institutions. The microscope, which will cost $24,947, will allow both students and faculty to view organisms that express fluorescently labeled proteins.

“The microscope will allow us to teach and research subjects that were not possible without it,” said Dr.

Dennis Frisby, assistant professor of biological sciences.

Frisby requested this specific microscope to use for the study of acetylcholine synthesis and transmission.

Research in this area could contribute to a clearer understanding of how diseases such as Alzheimer’s work, and could possibly lead to better treatments.

“Students in this area will now have the opportunity to work with and learn new technology, which we think will make them more employable,” said Dr. John McArthur, Dean of the school of science and technology.
