For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, Jan. 26, 2005 Oty to chair CU math sciences department The selection of a new chair for the Cameron University Department of Mathematical Sciences was one problem easily solved. Associate professor Dr. Karla Oty was appointed as department chair and confirmed by the Board of Regents for the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University at its monthly meeting Tuesday in Oklahoma City. “Dr. Oty has a wealth of experience in and out of the classroom,” said Dr. Gary Buckley, vice president for academic affairs. “She is an astute scholar with an established teaching and research career. She is a great asset to the university.” Oty came to Cameron at the beginning of the Fall 2004 semester from Colorado State University-Pueblo. She brings with her 11 years of experience in teaching mathematical sciences and research in the field. Oty also served as chair of the department of mathematics at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for four years. “I am honored to have been selected to serve as chair of the mathematical sciences department,” Oty said. “I look forward to working with the faculty members, staff and administrators at Cameron.” (over) oty, ADD ONE Oty's professional memberships include the American Mathematical Society, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Oklahoma Academy of Science and the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Oty also serves as the departmental representative of mathematics to the State Transfer Committee and is the co-advisor for the CU MathCom student activity club.
