For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, Nov. 11, 2004 Department of foreign languages offers more than 145 classes to Cameron students With enrollment for the Spring 2005 semester in full swing, Cameron University can cover students’ language learning needs from Afrikaans to Zulu. Cameron’s foreign languages department offers 147 classes in 45 languages, including commonly-studied languages (Spanish, French, German and Italian) and an extensive selection of less-commonly taught courses, such as Arabic, Russian and Scottish Gaelic. “We have 147 opportunities for them to learn the language they’ve always wanted to speak,” said department chair Dr. Teresa M. Lubrano. “Whether it’s Portuguese or French or Zulu, we have it.” Lubrano added that possessing the ability to speak another language afforded students a wide array of post-graduate possibilities. “Foreign languages open up career opportunities in all fields,” she said. “Having the knowledge of a foreign language is extremely important in today’s global community.” Foreign language courses are offered in the traditional in-class format, as well as through directed readings or intensive, individual study. Dr. George Stanley, professor of African and Middle-Eastern languages and linguistics, said the variety of scheduling allows students the interaction of the traditional class setting or the (over) languages, ADD ONE flexibility of the tutorial studies. “Tutorial classes give students the benefit of one-on-one interaction with the professor,” Stanley said. “They allow them to study at their own pace and I’ve found that students taking the tutorial classes move at a very rapid pace.” The foreign languages department offers courses in following languages: Afrikaans, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Biblical Hebrew, Catalan, Chinese Mandarin, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hausa, Indonesian, Italian, Kazakh, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Latin, Lingala, Malay, New Testament Greek, Norwegian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Scottish Gaelic, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tajik, Turkish, Turkmen, Uighur, Uzbek, Welsh, Xhosa, Yoruba and Zulu. “CU students are very fortunate to be able to study some of the world’s critical languages, languages that are only taught at major universities,” Stanley said. “Students need to know that Cameron’s foreign language program is one of the best in the country. We constantly receive requests from language programs all over the country for help in finding materials in less-commonly-taught languages.” Enrollment for the Spring 2005 semester continues through Dec. 22. Enrollment will reopen Jan. 3, 2005. – 30 – PR#04-261 Editors and Broadcasters: For details, contact CU Government & Community Relations at 580.581.2211.
