Cameron University celebrates its cultures with Diversity Week festivities, Oct. 4-8

Cameron University’s campus will be filled with the sights, sounds and tastes of global cultures as students and faculty celebrate “Diversity Week: Many Faces, One Vision,” Oct. 4-8.

Diversity Week allows Cameron students to experience firsthand the traditions and customs of cultures with which they might otherwise have no contact. Activities take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. daily.

Diversity week activities begin Monday with a focus on American Indian heritage. Students and visitors can explore a teepee while listening to Native American music and witnessing performances of traditional dance.

On Tuesday, students and visitors can experience poetry, music and dancing as Hispanic/Latino heritage is recognized. Participants will also be able to sample foods from six different Hispanic nations.

Wednesday’s events will center around Asian/Pacific Islander heritage. Guests can learn from maps, displays and a multimedia presentation, as well as be entertained by traditional Asian music.

Thursday is Black American heritage day featuring informational displays and food reflecting Black

American culture. Guests will enjoy music and step dance demonstrations.

The week’s festivities will conclude on Friday with “SOCArnival,” a celebration of the culture of the

Caribbean Islands, hosted by the Students of the Caribbean Alliance (SOCA). Events will include a parade, food festival and plenty of music and dancing.

Diversity Week is particularly relevant at CU, a campus that boasts one of the most culturally diverse campuses in Oklahoma with students from all over the United States and more than 40 foreign countries.

This diversity will be put on display at a cultural showcase in the Shepler Center Mezzanine at 8 p.m.

Thursday. The showcase will include performances of poetry, dance, music and art reflecting the variety of cultures represented on Cameron’s campus.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the CU Office of Student
