Cameron enrollment up significantly this fall

Cameron University officials report that enrollment for the fall semester is up significantly from a year ago.

Information collected on the tenth day of classes – the official census day of the semester – showed Fall

2004 enrollment at Cameron was 5,779 students. The current enrollment is an increase of 318 students – or 5.8 percent – from the Fall 2003 semester. In terms of FTE growth, it is an increase of 7.2 percent over the previous fall semester.

FTE — “full-time equivalent” — is a standard used by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to more accurately compare enrollment at various colleges and universities, and is based on computing enrollment as if every one of a university’s students were enrolled full-time. FTE plays an important role in determining the amount of funding a public university receives from the state.

“This is the second straight year of healthy enrollment growth at Cameron University,” said President Cindy

Ross. “The significant increase in enrollment shows that students are making Cameron their “university of choice.” These students are assured of a top-quality education under caring faculty. We’re delighted they chose CU.”

Cameron welcomed a freshman class of 2,317 students to campus this fall. It’s the largest number of freshmen in the university’s history, topping the Fall 1991 class of 2,288.

The university’s graduate school is made up of 415 students this semester, an increase of 8.1 percent from a year ago.

Cameron’s branch campus in Duncan also registered a significant increase in enrollment this fall in comparison to the Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 semesters. More than 400 students are enrolled in 2,766 hours of classes – a 16.5-percent increase over the record-high enrollment of last spring, and an estimated

40-percent increase from Fall 2003.

“The growth in enrollment at CU-Duncan is gratifying,” Ross said. “We thank the Oklahoma Legislature, under the leadership of Rep. Jari Askins and Sen. Daisy Lawler, along with Gov. Brad Henry, for establishing the Duncan branch campus to allow Cameron to better serve the citizens of that area.”
