Cameron theatre department presents Antigone
Tickets are on sale now for the Cameron University production of the classic play by Sophocles, Antigone,
set for April 22-25 in Lawton.
Presented by the CU Department of Music and Theatre Arts, the production is the culmination of the
university's current theatrical season “Another Opening, Another Show!” Curtain times are 8 p.m. Thursday
through Saturday in the Studio Theatre, located in the Louise D. McMahon Fine Arts Complex. In addition,
a 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled for Sunday.
The Cameron "classic" revolves around Antigone's devotion to her brother and her defiance of Creon's
edict in order to obey a higher law. As the play opens, her two brothers, Polynices and Eteocles, have just
killed each other. Creon, the new king, forbids Polynices' corpse to be buried.
Antigone conducts a funeral service despite the ban and is then imprisoned by Creon in a vault, where she
hangs herself before Creon undergoes a change of heart. The play has often been interpreted as a
justification for civil disobedience and as a vindication of the unwritten laws of conscience.
The cast for Antigone includes CU students and members of the community: Arline-Vazquez-Morales,
Tavaris Kelly, Robert Walker, Lee Cantrell, Charles Calhoun, Bryan West and Randy Corrales, all from
Lawton; Helen Hoepfner and Kerri Story both of Oklahoma City; Tammy French and Byron Phillips from
Elgin; Melodie Spurlin of Guymon; Corey Jiron of Burbank, Calif.; Quantronle Ray of Jacksonville, N.C.
and Majorie Zoe Negron-Munoz from Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Working backstage for this production are Drew Blackburn, Joey Roberts, Khang Le, Kori Morrow, Shemika
Phillips and Nick LeDoux, all from Lawton.
Tickets for Antigone are $10 for adults and $8 for all others. Cameron students will be admitted free with
valid identification. To make reservations, contact the CU Theatre Box Office at 580/581-2478.
