For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, March 3, 2004 Auditions planned at Cameron for ‘Antigone’ Open auditions have been announced for Antigone, the final production in “Another Opening, Another Show,” Cameron University’s 2003-2004 theatrical season. Written by the ancient Greek dramatist Sophocles, the classic tragedy revolves around Antigone's devotion to her brother and her defiance of Creon's edict, in order to obey a higher law. As the play opens, her brothers, Polynices and Eteocles, have just killed each other. New king Creon, forbids Polynices' corpse to be buried, leading Antigone to conduct a funeral service in spite of the ban. Creon imprisons her in a vault, where she hangs herself before he undergoes a change of heart. The play has often been interpreted as a justification for civil disobedience and as a vindication of the unwritten laws of conscience. Auditions will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday, March 7-8, in the Studio Theatre, located in the Louise D. McMahon Fine Arts Complex on Cameron’s campus in Lawton. Auditions are open to all actors and course credit is available for college students. The CU Department of Music and Theatre Arts will present Antigone April 22-25. – 30 – PR#04-048 Editors and Broadcasters: For more information contact CU Government & Community Relations at 580.581.2211.
