Organization Advisor Agreement
THANK YOU! As you know, the strength and diversity of a student’s education extends far beyond the
classroom into the many extracurricular opportunities that are available on campus. An important component
to leadership development for our students is the mentorship that occurs when students work alongside
faculty and staff in exploring a wide range of ideas and perspectives.
Cameron University requires that all recognized student organizations have an advisor. An advisor must be a
full-time employee of Cameron University, either as a faculty member or staff member. Student organizations
are run and managed by students themselves, but advisors can play a key role in offering guidance and advice.
All organizations are managed differently and each organization has a unique relationship with its advisor. The
following expectations have been defined by Cameron University as being integral to the student organizationadvisor-student activities office relationship.
Advisors should. . .
 be familiar with the mission, goals, and purpose of the student organization
 maintain regular contact with the officers
 provide continuity in a student organization’s program from year to year
 help the group uphold Cameron University’s policies and guidelines
 maintain an awareness of the activities and programs sponsored by the student organization
 assist the organization’s Treasurer in monitoring and adhering to the budget
 be familiar with national structure and services, if relevant
Advisors should expect the student organization’s officers to . . .

 treat them with respect
 make them feel welcome at all meetings and activities
 discuss concerns and issues with the advisor
 be considerate of their professional obligations
 use them as a sounding board for discussing plans and problems
 acknowledge the advisor’s time and energy are donated, and express appreciation
 be aware that the success or failure of the organization and its events rest on the members of the
organization itself, not the advisor
Advisors and organizations can expect the Student Activities Office to . . .
 inform and update them on opportunities with the University
 provide structured activities to market their organization and recruit new members
 offer opportunities for both students and advisors to enhance their skills and knowledge
 arrange for chances to network with other organizations and advisors to learn best practices
