Minutes Strategic Planning Implementation Committee May 28, 2014 Cahill Center Conference Room Present: Scott Frees, Missy Long, Stephen Sondey, Gurvinder Khaneja, Dorothy Echols Tobe, Jackie Braun, Stephanie Barlow Lauren Fuhring, Sandra Diaz, Michael DeBartolomeo, Nicole Pulliam Absent: The Committee reviewed achievement targets for measurability and started with achievement targets 1.1.1. We discussed the definition of rigor and how it is measured. Each convening group measure/assess rigor based on national standards for the major, i.e. APA and ACM. The Strategic Plan Implementation Grid has the DAL (Deep Approaches to Learning Index) as a measure of rigor and Gurvinder Khaneja indicated that it is not the best measure of rigor. NSSE/CLA hard to compare by discipline, national criteria. Next we discussed and questioned the assessment of: Effective Teaching and Advisement. 1.3.1.a— support the participation of faculty in developmental activities on . . . advising, and . . . at least 25% of adjunct faculty annually engage in activities to improve teaching and learning, 1.3.1.g— Reappointment and tenure—it was clarified that effective teaching and advising would be assessed through the Reappointment and tenure process but we needed clarity on effective advisement. The Faculty Handbook discusses effective teaching. Adjuncts don’t do advising—only as First Year Seminar instructors. Assessing faculty service was discussed and it was determined that it needed to be clarified. 1.3.3— The College will facilitate the development and implementation of a system for assessing faculty service that is tied to personnel decisions in order to meet the need for broad engagement in governance and contribution to the College by all faculty members. Assessing under-represented and socioeconomic populations was discussed and it was determined that both needed to be clarified based on how these populations were defined by the state or federal government. 1.4.2 The College will increase the actual number of students from underrepresented racial and socioeconomic populations by 5%. Dorothy indicated she would review the academic measure with Provost Barnett.
