PREREQUISITES FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
AND
PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAMS
PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO THE
ENTRY-LEVEL GRADUATE PROGRAM IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO THE
DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAM
Students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and may
prepare for Occupational Therapy while pursuing any major course of study. Some majors
may be designed as pre-Occupational Therapy, but students are cautioned to not assume that
programs designed as such will necessarily benefit their application.

NOTE: One unit at University of Puget Sound equals six quarter hours or four semester
hours of credit.

hours of credit.
1.
Anatomy and Physiology, preferably with labs: EXSC 221 & 222 or equivalent
(2 units)
1.
Human Anatomy and Physiology (laboratories must be included): EXSC 221 & 222
or equivalent.
2. Human Development/Human Behavioral Science: a total of 3 units, distributed as
follows:
2.
General College Physics (laboratories must be included): PHYS 111 & 112 or
equivalent.
3.
Chemistry (laboratories must be included): CHEM 110 & 111 or equivalent.
4.
Elements of Applied Statistics: MATH 160 or PSYC 201 & 301 or equivalent.
5.
One course in psychology or sociology emphasizing human behavior or disability.
Puget Sound courses that fulfill the requirement include PSYC 101 Introduction to
Psychology; PSYC 295 Abnormal Psychology; CSOC 206 Deviance and Social
Control; or CSOC 370 Disability, Identity, and Power.
A.
Human Development through the life span: PSYC 273 & 274 or equivalent
(2 units)
Note: It is possible to complete the Human Development prerequisite within a single
course covering the life span. In this case, students must complete 2 units in
category (B) listed below:
B.
Human Behavioral Science: course(s) in Anthropology, Psychology, or Sociology
at the 200 level or above (except where noted) addressing at least one of the
following content areas (1 unit):
i.
ii.
iii.
Normal and abnormal behavior of individuals and/or groups;
The analysis of behavior of individuals and/or groups and their interactions;
Culture and mental health.
3. Elements of Applied Statistics: MATH 160 or PSYC 201 & 301 or equivalent (1 unit).
All prerequisite courses must be taken for a letter grade, and students must earn at least a "C"
in each course. A minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate grade point average or a grade point
average above 3.25 for the last 2 years of academic work is also required for admission.
2009 Advising Manual
Prerequisite courses should be completed within 10 years of entry into the program. If a
longer time has elapsed, the applicant must submit a letter explaining how the knowledge
has been kept current.
All prerequisite courses must be taken for a letter grade, and students must earn at least a
"C" grade in each course. The grades from Physics, Anatomy, and Physiology classes must
average to a "B" or better with no single grade less than "C." Because course content can
be divided into specific courses in different ways, the faculty highly recommends that each
science prerequisite course sequence be completed at a single college or university.
Questions about prerequisite course equivalencies should be directed in writing to the
Office of Admission, accompanied by a course description including the name of the school
and an unofficial transcript of the coursework completed. Only written inquiries will be
answered. Prior to submission of the application for admission, all evaluations are unofficial.
In addition, unofficial evaluations are completed only between May 1 and October 1.
