PREREQUISITES FOR
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND
PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAMS
Courses listed in this section of the University of Puget Sound Advising Manual are
intended for the use of students at Washington community colleges who are completing
prerequisites for entrance into the Occupational Therapy Program or the Physical
Therapy Programs only.
PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO
THE ENTRY LEVEL GRADUATE
PROGRAM IN OCCUPATIONAL
THERAPY:
1.
PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO
THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY
PROGRAM:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university. Students may prepare themselves for
Occupational Therapy while pursuing any major course
of study. Some majors may be designed as preOccupational Therapy. Students are cautioned not to
assume that programs designed as such will benefit their
application.
2.
Human Anatomy and Physiology including labs
completed within 5 years prior to enrollment.
3.
Human Development/Human Behavioral Science
completed within 10 years prior to enrollment: a total of 3
courses distributed as follows:
A.
Human Development through the life span:
Developmental Psychology - infancy through
childhood and Developmental Psychology adolescence through death.
NOTE: It is sometimes possible to meet the Human
Development prerequisite within a single course, in
which case you must complete 2 courses in the
category listed below.
B.
Human Behavioral Science courses (one or more
courses needed to complete the 3 course Human
Development/Human Behavioral Science
requirement): Anthropology, Psychology or Sociology
at the 200 level or above addressing at least one of
the following content areas:
i.
ii.
iii.
Applicants to the Master of Occupational Therapy
program or Master of Science in Occupational Therapy
program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an
accredited college or university.
5.
Applied Statistics completed within 10 years prior to
enrollment.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university. Students may prepare themselves for
Physical Therapy while pursuing any major course of
study. Some majors may be designed as pre-Physical
Therapy. Students are cautioned not to assume that
programs designed as such will benefit their application.
2.
Human Anatomy and Physiology including labs.
3.
General College Physics including labs.
4.
Fundamentals of Chemistry with a grade of “C” or better
in each course, including labs.
5.
Applied Statistics with a grade of “C” or better.
6.
A course in psychology or sociology emphasizing human
behavior or disability with a grade of “C” or better. Puget
Sound courses that fulfill the requirement include
Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology or
Deviant Behavior.
7.
Presentational Communication, Argument and Debate, or
Group Decision Making with a grade of “C” or better.
In general, prerequisite courses should be completed no more
than 10 years before entry into the program. If a longer time
has elapsed, the applicant should submit a letter explaining
how the knowledge has been kept current.
All prerequisite courses must be taken for a letter grade. The
grades from Physics and Anatomy courses must average to a
“B” or better with no single grade less than “C.” Because
course content can be divided into specific courses in different
ways, the faculty highly recommends that each science
prerequisite course sequence be completed at a single
college or university. Questions about prerequisite course
equivalencies should be directed to the Office of Admission in
letter form, accompanied by a course description including the
name of the school and an unofficial transcript of the course
work completed. Only written inquiries will be answered.
Prior to submission of the application for admission, all
evaluations are unofficial. In addition, unofficial evaluations
are completed only between May 1 and October 1.
