CEPANA
Cepad Farm located in community of Samulali
Norman Kuang (Angela’s son) is the farm manager. Now Norman controls the farm operation and
utilizes good environmental practices. Since 2005 the farm has been cleaned, a topographical map
made and the agricultural engineer utilized GPS to make specific maps of the land. 3 agricultural
engineers now work with the farm and make decisions together. Soil types are regarded in the
decision making process. A new budget and accounting system are now in place.
Carlos Villagra is the Agricultural Engineer- works in the communities in the Matagalpa region.
Prior to 2005 CEPAD rented out the ground. It was misused and little income realized as the rent
was very low, mostly symbolic. Twenty-five acres rented.
A Canadian organization has funded a 200’ well that provides 20 gallon per minute. This provides a
consistent supply of water as the spring in the forest often dries up during the summer.
New auditorium for training sessions.
New purification system for the water with support from a U.S. delegation. Will eventually be able
to supply community with purified drinking water.
Starting to plant alternative crops. 2 acres behind the training area have been put into grapes and
passion fruit. Possibly will have other vine plants such as squash in the area as well.
13 acres will be re-planted with trees. Current delegation is helping to plant the first two acres of
trees.
Visionary projects- areas for raising and training cattle, hogs, poultry and a hybrid animal of sheep
and goats. A budget has been compiled. Fabricio will translate the budgets for me. The plan is to
eventually be 50% crop- 5-% livestock.
There will be a need for more cabins to house students and delegations
(cost per unit??)
It is necessary for the farm to become self-sustaining financially instead of requiring outside
donations. It is necessary for the farm to become a model with technical transformation for the area
communities. However, people with more technical skills are needed as well.
Communities served by CEPANA are Siares, Guadalupe 1 & 2, Samulali, Susali, Peder Colorado,
and San Martin.
TREE PROJECTS
Baby trees can be purchased from CEPAD for 10 cordova each. Fruit trees will be 20 cordova. The
staff started the trees from seed in small plastic bags.
200 trees can be transported in a small pickup and would cost 500 cordovas per trip.
A large truck will haul 5000 trees and only cost 2 million cordovas. Plant population is 2500 trees
per acre. The trees are planted 4 metres apart in a triangle formation
