Welcome the NEW Office of Sustainability and Energy Management
Developing a Strategic Action Plan
o Incorporate AASHE theme: Resiliency and Adaptation
o Some universities combine: emergency management plan + sustainability plan to prepare for
climate change
Update on Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI)
o Alumni/Staff contribution fund currently in the review process
o 52% student approval on survey;
o The Road to Approval: Ryan Hermance (SGA Pres) Dr. Belcher Board of Trustees Board of
Governors in February (mostly new; conservative when it comes to approving new fees)
Campus Lighting Performance Contract update
o Construction is scheduled to begin late April/early May.
Parking and transportation issues:
o Our office is helping to develop strategies regarding this issue.
o Leveraging RidePost for carpool permits (carpool comments below)
o Parking garage = Bandaid; need a culture shift
o Carpool discount for groups and distribute x amount of day passes per rider (2-3/month?)
o Amy Mackenzie: obvious that staff and sustainability were NOT involved in the plan (i.e. a plan
for a parking deck, not parking improvements)
o Suggestion: Transportation/Commuter Services Coordinator (how many schools have?); Zipcar
o Suggestion: Share already-designated vans (College of Arts & Sciences; Service Learning)
o RidePost addition (i.e. Clemson): Events/games (register online); Biltmore Park (for graduate
students)
o Parking fees will be based on salary versus tier system
o Anja’s presentation connects to multimodal transportation goal in Strategic Plan (research
found that staff drive less than anyone else)
UNC Energy Internship Program update
o Had a productive meeting
o Asking funding from Duke
o Terrence Ferravich has left GA and is no longer the contact; This may delay the establishment of
the internship position
Pilot campus for Intelen (Energy Behavior Analytics App)
o New product introduced as pilot program to CA and UNC schools systems
o Includes: quizzes, tips, commitment buttons
HHS received Gold LEED Certification from USGBC
o Report/story when Galen returns (out sick)
Annual campus Recycling and Energy Usage update
Minutes 2013
o 37% reduction since 2002
Updates from the group: Lauren Bishop will be co-teaching ES 350 Capstone course with Jay Gerlach next
semester; Sustainable Commuter Transportation Presentation (Anja), Dec. 4, 4pm; Kickstarter to help fund
projects/research/internships if SEI is not approved by the Board of Governors
*Lauren has noticed an increase of requests for presentations from the OS&EM, revealing a shift from
apathy empathy!
