Minutes 2013 Sustainability Council Friday, November 22, 2013 9:00 am – 10:00 a.m. Campus Recreation Center Sustainability and Energy Management Updates: Welcome the NEW Office of Sustainability and Energy Management Developing a Strategic Action Plan o Incorporate AASHE theme: Resiliency and Adaptation o Some universities combine: emergency management plan + sustainability plan to prepare for climate change Update on Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI) o Alumni/Staff contribution fund currently in the review process o 52% student approval on survey; o The Road to Approval: Ryan Hermance (SGA Pres) Dr. Belcher Board of Trustees Board of Governors in February (mostly new; conservative when it comes to approving new fees) Campus Lighting Performance Contract update o Construction is scheduled to begin late April/early May. Parking and transportation issues: o Our office is helping to develop strategies regarding this issue. o Leveraging RidePost for carpool permits (carpool comments below) o Parking garage = Bandaid; need a culture shift o Carpool discount for groups and distribute x amount of day passes per rider (2-3/month?) o Amy Mackenzie: obvious that staff and sustainability were NOT involved in the plan (i.e. a plan for a parking deck, not parking improvements) o Suggestion: Transportation/Commuter Services Coordinator (how many schools have?); Zipcar o Suggestion: Share already-designated vans (College of Arts & Sciences; Service Learning) o RidePost addition (i.e. Clemson): Events/games (register online); Biltmore Park (for graduate students) o Parking fees will be based on salary versus tier system o Anja’s presentation connects to multimodal transportation goal in Strategic Plan (research found that staff drive less than anyone else) UNC Energy Internship Program update o Had a productive meeting o Asking funding from Duke o Terrence Ferravich has left GA and is no longer the contact; This may delay the establishment of the internship position Pilot campus for Intelen (Energy Behavior Analytics App) o New product introduced as pilot program to CA and UNC schools systems o Includes: quizzes, tips, commitment buttons HHS received Gold LEED Certification from USGBC o Report/story when Galen returns (out sick) Annual campus Recycling and Energy Usage update Minutes 2013 o 37% reduction since 2002 Updates from the group: Lauren Bishop will be co-teaching ES 350 Capstone course with Jay Gerlach next semester; Sustainable Commuter Transportation Presentation (Anja), Dec. 4, 4pm; Kickstarter to help fund projects/research/internships if SEI is not approved by the Board of Governors *Lauren has noticed an increase of requests for presentations from the OS&EM, revealing a shift from apathy empathy!
