4.3Which of the four possible PhD projects do you prefer?

Project title Project topic description ✓

1. (Public Policy) Improving awareness of the nature and value of cultural heritage, particularly in terms of its ability to influence the formation of public policy

2. (Public Policy) Investigating awareness of the notion and political value of European citizenship

3. (Intercultural Interactions)

Investigating the nature, extent and reversibility of national and international debt and financial liabilities within the European

Union

4. (Intercultural Interactions)

Investigating the nature of the processes which occur above and beyond the structures of states and nations

The first project will address a theme relating to awareness of the nature and value of cultural heritage. By bringing together cultural heritage and public policy, the project may address issues such as collection strategy, curatorial roles, education, public dissemination and public engagement.

The second project will address a theme relating to awareness of the notion and political value of European citizenship. A contentious issue in modern-day Britain where a departure from the European Union is under debate, this project will focus – in a diachronic as well as synchronic sense – on the value and meaning attaching to European citizenship.

The third project will investigate the nature, extent and reversibility of national debt within the European Union. A topic which is perplexing economists all around the world, it will examine different cultural contexts in order to compare and contrast the effectiveness of proposed solutions, using test cases taken from a number of European countries.

The fourth project will investigate the nature of the processes that occur above and beyond the structures of states and nations. Some of the specific questions addressed by this project may include analysis of the lived experience of democratic processes, changing understandings of citizienship in the context of migration, and rethinking the implications of international intervention in such contexts as genocide, state failure and cross-state environmental challenges.
