The Orange Peel By: John Burrell For my review, I chose to do it on a concert venue about an hour away in Asheville. It is called The Orange Peel, and it has hosted several big name musicians throughout its lifetime. The Orange Peel in its current form was founded in 2002 by the downtown Asheville redevelopment organization Public Interest Projects. Orange Peel was the name of the club during the 1960s and 70s, but wasn’t reborn until 2002. Throughout its ten year career The Orange Peel has hosted musical talent such as Bob Dylan, The Smashing Pumpkins , Deadmau5, the Beastie Boys, The Black Keys, Lauryn Hill, Ice Cube, Megadeth, Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon, Lamb of God, and Skrillex. In 2008 The Orange Peel was named one of the top five rock clubs in the nation by Rolling Stone magazine. It has also been mentioned in several other publications as being one of the better places to play in the country. It truly has a lot of publicity surrounding it, and for good reason. It is a very worthy place to go and visit during your time at this university. With all these great bands and good exposure The Orange Peel has been getting, I think it makes an excellent place to visit during your time at Western Carolina University. I personally have been to three concerts at The Orange Peel, and I am attending two more this fall. It is a great venue for concerts and they have a very diverse offering of bands and artists that perform there. No matter your musical taste, The Orange Peel will have something that you can enjoy. Being from this area and being a big music fan, I have searched around and even went as far as Charlotte and Atlanta to go to concerts that I wanted to see. I can personally tell you that there hasn’t been another “on the floor” type of venue I’ve ever been to. Of course some of the massive stadiums and arenas in the Charlotte and Atlanta areas have bigger and better shows, but at The Orange Peel you really feel more connected to whoever is performing. Often times the band and artists will even be around the merchandise tables that inhabit the right part of the show times. It is a good feeling to meet the band that just played that you thought was really good. I think that The Orange Peel gives you a good feel for the band that you see, and you feel more connected to them afterwards. The inside of the place is simply a big wide open floor that concert goers stand on. There is a simple stage in the center of the room. The maximum capacity of The Orange Peel is around 1100 people, including employees. On the plus side, you are very close to whoever is performing, and you get to see your favorite artists. However, on the negative side of things, there are a lot of people everywhere. With the high amount of people in a relatively small space, it does get relatively hot in there during high energy performances. Whenever a show begins inside The Orange Peel, it gets incredibly loud inside. It is even virtually impossible to speak to the person next to you. However, I would hope this is justified since it is a concert, and you pay to listen to the music. Another thing is the standing. I don’t know about you, but I find it annoying to stand for three to four hours. Add to that the fact that you can feel every low note of the show you are watching, and it can get a little uncomfortable. There is limited seating available to those with handicaps and disabilities, but seating is limited to that and VIP’s. It can be a little uncomfortable, but it is worth it to see your favorite artists perform, and you are much closer and more into the action while standing up. All in all, The Orange Peel is a very worthy place to visit during your time here in this area. There are a few problems with it, but overall it is an awesome concert venue in a very unique city. I highly recommend that every person that attends this college go to Asheville at least once during their time here. The Orange Peel is a great excuse to go, if you can find a comedy show, or musician that you like that is playing there.
