Dean’s Report
Michael reported the following:
Council of Deans Workday Update
• Summer Director Pay Stipends– Michael will review the stipend list and
contact department heads for input.
• Pay-for-print – Initial bill will be sent to Provost. Please remind faculty to be
cautious with printing as costs can add up quickly. On May 12th, the council
of deans will meet with Bobby Justice and Chuck Wooten to discuss payfor-print. Leadership council members are encouraged to email questions to
Michael before this meeting.
• Swine flu – if a case is confirmed in NC, “social distancing” may be
implemented and could affect end of semester events. Stay tuned to updates.
• An information update about graduate assistantships has sent out by Scott
Higgins.
•
•
•
•
Lapsed salaries, unfilled vacancies – there may be an opportunity to tap into
those dollars. On an annual basis there is about 5 million dollars.
Michael thanked the department heads for their work on realigning faculty to
cover courses and reducing part time costs.
Merit Pay Proposal – David and Dee are on the Task Force working on this.
More information will be forthcoming.
Distance Education – issues for educational outreach and the colleges were
identified. This was a good meeting. A task force will be organized to look
at what the vision for educational outreach should look like on our campus.
By the end of summer, there should be a clearer picture of how educational
outreach and the colleges interact, and how resources are to be allocated.
Provost Council -Met Tuesday, April 28th
• Swine Flu updates will continue – please stay informed.
• Funds for Governors awards for superior teaching are available. CEAP has
already submitted paperwork for this year's payments.
• 2009 Freshman Class - SAT score average may be up to 1044, expect 1400
to 1470 freshman. This may cause an increase in liberal studies course
offerings for fall. Deposits received are up. Jacque reported graduate
enrollments in ELF programs are also up.
• Carol Burton mentioned that seats are being held in liberal studies courses in
preparation for the increased class size.
• Consider establishing hiring pools for adjunct faculty in preparation of
additional course offerings.
• Discretionary dollars are those dollars given by the Chancellor to the college
for food. Food purchases with any non-state funds require the permission of
the dean and the Provost Office.
• Pay-for-print – If we delay Pay-for-Print we are subject to penalties from
Ikon. CEAP will be one of the first colleges for implementation.
Departments need to be aware of budget implications. No pay for print costs
will be taken from the college for May and June. As fall approaches, the
implementation team will additional roll-out items like how to set print
limits.
• Budget concerns will extend into the next year. Stay tuned over the summer.
Discussion
Council Members
McKee Lab when CSD Leave Building for New Health Bldg
Michael
• David McCord will chair Department Heads to develop a plan for the use of the
space vacated by CSD in McKee. This space will be used by CEAP for assessment
purposes by Psychology. Other departments would also have opportunities to use
the space for assessment activities. The plan should include recommendations per
Psychology's Program Review Document. During the program review, external
reviewers pointed out the need for laboratory space for the Psychology department.
Newsletter and Video *
Jamel
Jamel reviewed the recent cultural competence and service learning newsletter she
developed in collaboration with other council members. The newsletter highlights some
of the important work being done by CEAP. If you have suggestions or know of faculty
projects that should be spotlighted in future issues, please let Jamel know. Michael
thanked Jamel and recommends other units consider doing something like this.
Jamel also developed a wonderful video about CEAP which featured service learning
activities in CEAP. Michael asked Jamel to work with Lee to post this video on the
college website. The newsletter has been sent electronically to the college and our
community partners.
ENGL 102 Teacher Ed Admission
Dan
Students are being advised to take ENG 102 in their sophomore year. Because of this,
the Professional Education Council has suggested and approved the suspension of ENG
102 as a requirement for admission to teacher education; however, in order to stay on
top of the requirement, confirmation of completion of ENG 102 will be added as a field
to the student application for internship. A motion was made, seconded and approved to
support the recommendation of the PEC. David also made suggestions as to how this
could be reflected in the degree audit for advisor use.
Honors and Awards Celebration Debrief
Jackie/Michael
The council discussed this year’s Honors and Awards celebration and affirmed that it
was a wonderful event and opportunity to recognize and appreciate students. Several
positive comments from students and faculty have been sent to Jackie about the event.
Next year photos will be taken in the Public Relations Office at the request of the PR
Office and not at the ceremony. The following suggestions were made: 1) presenters
should sit in the first row of the audience instead of on stage, 2) review and discuss the
setup of the program for placement of student biographies, 3) provide an award
information sheet to departments with biographies, and 4) special programs office will
forward the student biography form used for scholarships to departments for use in
gathering biographical information for award recipients. Michael thanked all for a
professional event.
Scholarship Recipient Summary *
Jackie
Jackie provided a summary of the scholarship work processed through the Special
Programs office this year which included the number of applicants and the recipients to
date. There have been over 1000 contacts and 258 awards to date. The TEACH loan
/grant program is being looked at by financial aid office and it may be an additional
scholarship offering in the future. When specific information is available on this
program, Jackie will review the information with the council.
Program Completion Evaluation Results
Renee
Renee reviewed program survey results for teacher education completers and noted the
reliability for the survey items is high although the response rate was low.
Annual Assessment Reporting Format
Renee
Annual program assessment reporting is due to Renee on May 15th. Renee reviewed the
portfolio requirements for reporting received from Melissa Wargo. Renee will send an
email to Melissa asking that an email be sent to the program directors with the portfolio
