REQUIRED ATTENDANCE OF TAUGHT COURSES IN YEAR 1 OF THE MPHIL/PHD (for all new incoming MPhil/PhD students starting from January 2009) • Attendance of some taught courses in year-1 only of the MPhil/PhD is required for all new incoming MPhil/ PhD students (self-funded or not; parttime (PT) or full-time (FT)). Exemption is granted for students already in possession of an MSc in History and Philosophy of Science or in Science and Technology Studies (including the London Centre MSc) from a UCLrecognised Higher Education Institution. • Format: For FT students coming in term 1, the required taught courses are: the Perspectives portion of the London Centre Msc core course (plus write two essays out of the core course). Term 2: take 1 option course of the London Centre MSc from the available list (plus write the 2 related essays). Essays for both the core course and the option courses will be marked by the relevant PhD supervisors and assessed as part of the 6-month MPhil/PhD review progress. Term 3: write a substantial research proposal of approximately 10,000 words, which will be assessed at 1-year progress review. For PT students, the dept. allows for flexibility as to what portion of the core course to attend and the total number of essays required are 2 (1 from the core course, and 1 from the option course) instead of 4. • Variation to the format: Depending on the subject of the student’s specialization, the above requirements may be substituted with suitable year-3 BSc courses available in the dept., or with graduate courses in other departments or institutions, with comparable writing requirements and assessment as per above. If a BSc course is used for this purpose, agreement by the relevant course tutor is required, and the supervisors must supplement it with additional readings and discussions as appropriate. • Plan: the plan of which taught courses are more appropriate for a given research proposal should be discussed by the PhD supervisors and the Graduate Tutor together with the MPhil/PhD applicant at the time of enrolment (induction week). • M.A.D.: To implement the following changes, the Methodology and Academic Development (MAD) program is revised as follows. For FT 1) attendance of MSc core course (or suitable year-3 BSc equivalent) = 10 points; 2) attendance of MSc option course = 10 points; 3) the remaining 10 points to reach the total of 30 points per year (for FT) to be chosen among the Graduate School Skills Development Program as usual. For PT, 1) attendance of some portion of MSc core course (or suitable year-3 BSc equivalent) = 5 points; 2) attendance of some portion of the MSc option course = 5 points; 3) the remaining 5 points to reach the total of 15 points per year to be chosen among the Graduate School Skills Development Program. rev: October 2008
