Momentum Practicum
Goal:
Using only the equipment listed below, complete all measurements and
calculations needed so that you can horizontally launch a projectile into a coffee can.
You may launch the projectile into the cart as many times as you wish. However, once
you turn the projectile launcher around and place the coffee can you must get Mr. K to
witness your first attempt to land the projectile into the coffee can.
Apparatus:
Data Studio file Momentum Practicum – allows for the measurement of the
velocity of the cart.

Projectile launcher
Projectile – a metal ball
Projectile attachment apparatus (clamp and pole)

The projectile launcher must be horizontal at all times (at 0°), be sure to check it
when you rotate the apparatus.
The bottom edge of the launcher tube should be at the height of the floor of the
catcher and the catcher should start as close as possible to the edge of the
launcher.
The projectile is a little small for the
catcher, so you must place some tape

into the catcher. Make a cylinder of
tape and place it into the catcher as in
the diagram to the right. You may have
to replace the tape after several trials.
