The Institute of Neurology is based in Queen Square a world renowned neurological centre. The UCL
Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, was established in 1950 and merged with University College
London in 1997. The Institute is a rather special place and is closely associated in its work with the
National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, and in combination they form a national and international Centre at Queen Square for teaching, training and research in neurology and allied clinical
and basic neurosciences. The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery celebrated 150 years since its foundation, in 2010, and continues to be integral to the Institute’s clinical research. Four of the top 12 most highly cited authors working worldwide in neuroscience and behaviour work at Queen Square.
I hope very much that you will enjoy studying with our Institute and the opportunity this course offers in a programme that is a world first as a comprehensive Diploma in Clinical Neurology via distance learning.
We wish you every success with your studies for the clinical neurology diploma via distance learning and we look forward to supporting you through the course.

This novel distance learning neurology diploma comprises approximately 400 e-lectures covering a wide range of topics in neurology, including neuropathology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, neuro-rehabilitation and neuro-oncology. The curriculum has been designed and written by leading neurologists in the UK, predominantly from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the UCL Institute of
Neurology, Queen Square, London.
Each session provides a comprehensive overview of the subject and the multi-media rich interactive features are designed to enhance the learning experience. In addition, every student is offered dedicated online support for the course from Queen Square and as this is a distance learning diploma, candidates can access the course material in their own time from the comfort of their home, work or any other computer.
We anticipate each session should take on average 20 minutes to complete and although each candidate can complete the course at his/her own pace, we envisage that most candidates will take between 18 to 24 months to complete the course. Assessments will be performed throughout the course and these will be in the form of multiple choice questions, short answer questions and short case histories. These will be supervised by the course tutor and teaching assistants. On completion of the course, students will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Neurology from UCL, which will be globally recognised and a valuable asset for any medical doctor with a specialist interest in neurology.

How much does to course cost?
The whole course will cost £5,560. Students on this programme should all pay £5,560 in the first year which can be paid in one or two instalments, depending on when you enrol. The fee covers the programme but does not include exams. Any fees incurred for sitting exams in UCL approved centres will be met by the student. These will typically be
£80 (approx. depending on the institution where you sit the exams) per exam (8 exams in total).
How do I enrol?
Upon receiving an Unconditional offer to study at UCL you will receive an e-mail with pre-enrolment instructions. To fully enrol you will need to send the photo page of your passport to the course administrator a.foakes@ucl.ac.uk
who will liaise with colleagues at UCL and process your enrolment.
How long will the course take to complete?
The course is entirely flexible and can be tailored to individual requirements, and can be completed between 12 to 36 months. The usual time is approximately 18 months.
Is there any difference in accreditation or international recognition for the UCL Diploma in Clinical Neurology via Distance Learning and your other
Diploma/MSc programs?
Both of our Diploma courses are awarded by UCL, as such there is no difference in accreditation or international recognition between the two.
Can this course be taken as part of your Neurology training program?
All of our courses are academic. Some national regulatory bodies may recognise this course as part of a trainee’s specialist training, but the course is not intended for this purpose, and you would have to find out from your home authorities whether completion of a UK higher degree would assist you in this way.
Does the UCL Diploma in Clinical Neurology via Distance Learning qualify the candidate for Neurology specialisation?
As above, the course is an academic programme. It depends on your own country’s governing structures whether completion of a higher degree permits you to cite this as a speciality. You would not be able to do so in the UK; as only specialist training within the NHS leads to that status.
What textbooks would you recommend?
Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook by Charles Clarke, Robin Howard, Martin Rossor, and Simon D. Shorvon. All students enrolled on this course will receive free access to a PDF copy of this book through the UCL Library system. You will need to have a valid UCL username and password to access this.
