Athena SWAN Newsletter – May 2015 Successful Athena SWAN Awards! All departments who applied in the November 2014 were successful in receiving an Athena SWAN award. Congratulations to the following departments and their SATs: Institute of Global Health: Bronze UCL School of Pharmacy: Bronze Department of Statistical Sciences: Bronze Department of Physics and Astronomy: Silver Please see an article on these results, with congratulations from Provost, here. Launch of new Athena SWAN charter The Athena SWAN charter has now been expanded to include non-science departments, and professional services members of staff. I will be arranging a workshop in the next few months to discuss the new requirements and how changes will affect departments holding or working towards a SWAN award. Free WISE membership for students UCL is a member of WISE (campaign to promote women in science, technology and engineering). Please promote WISE membership to STEM students and staff who can now benefit from free membership. Membership enables students and staff to attend networking events such as the annual WISE Student Colloquium, to get a discount on training courses for women in STEM, to attend events with potential STEM employers and notifications of bursaries and scholarships, or to become a role model. To activate free students membership, please see more information here. Request for volunteers We will be encouraging non-STEMM departments to take part in the new charter. If there are any SWAN award holding departments who would be interested in being paired with a non-STEMM department to support their application, please get in touch. Your experience would be extremely helpful to departments new to the process – and supporting other departments would also support any future applications for Gold.
