WEBQUEST SUMMARY Title: The Webs They Weave Grade: Topic: Standard & Benchmarks: 5 Food Webs Standard: Standard 3: Life and Environmental Sciences: ORGANISMS AND THE ENVIRONMENT: Understand the unity, diversity, and interrelationships of organisms, including their relationship to cycles of matter and energy in the environment Benchmark: SC.5.3.1: Describe the cycle of energy among producers, consumers, and decomposers I can statement: I can diagram and explain the flow of energy among producers, consumers, and decomposers in a food web. Outcome: Students will create a food web for a chosen ecosystem (in Hawai’i). Time Recommended: 60-90 minutes Materials needed: Materials – options to making the Food Web 1. Use PowerPoint, Inspiration or Kidspiration software to generate graphic organizers for the Food Web. OR 2. Draw the Food Web and include cut out pictures (e.g., magazines) or drawings. • • magazines & glue colored markers Skills – critical and creative thinking, resourcefulness, Equipment (beside computer) – none Vocabulary: Hawaiian vocabulary and pronunciations: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. food chain - Ku'ina mea'ai food web - Hihi mea'ai ecosystem - kaiaola producer - ho'ohua (to produce) consumer - ho'ohemu (to comsume) a. decomposer -- ho'omelu Options: Additional Information: You could provide other choices, such as a game or other physical product. When checking the data table: 1. Be sure students have a balanced number of organisms (herbivores, etc.). 2. Be sure that students enter organisms that match their chosen ecosystem and the animals/plants live in Hawaii. 3. Be sure the energy sources for each animal match. When checking the web: 1. Be sure all organisms are recorded in individual ovals. 2. Be sure the arrows all go in the correct direction. 3. Be sure arrows are drawn for each energy source When you check the visual, use the rubric as your guide. Display the completed Food Webs in an assigned area and allow students to do a gallery tour. If students need additional assistance on understanding food webs, allow them to practice making Food Webs in the Additional Resources section.
