DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS
(PROACTIVE CLAIMS ANALYSIS AND TRACKING SYSTEM)
ISSUE:
Coordination problems between structural and architectural design of building exterior.
BACKGROUND:
According to ProCATS data change orders of approximately $56,000 were issued on
two projects due to conflicts between structural and architectural design of building
exterior. On some building exterior of these two projects, windows and precast panels
were shown as recessed on the architectural drawings, but were not shown recessed
on structural drawings. In both cases the structural drawings were revised by the A/Es
and not the architectural drawings. Option of changing structural drawings than
architectural drawings was less expensive in both cases.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
The structural engineers are requested to remind the A/Es to pay attention to
architectural drawings for better coordination and to save cost in the future.
