Trustee Furutani called the meeting to order at 10:36 a.m.

REPORTS/RECOMMENDATIONS
Legislative and Budget Update
Mr. Patrick McCallum distributed copies of a document entitled “Los Angeles Community College District
Sacramento Update.” He summarized the document with respect to the 2007-08 state budget, budget challenges,
an update of the Community College Initiative, accountability, Career Technical Education, and other bills of
interest.
Trustee Scott-Hayes requested that the Board be provided with talking points regarding the state budget.
Mr. McCallum indicated that he would provide the Board with a video that includes talking points for the state
budget.
Trustee Scott-Hayes expressed her concern that the District needs to take more responsibility to provide better
counseling and other services for students.
There was discussion regarding the California Community Colleges systemwide accountability study as it relates
to transfer rates.
Development of Television Presentation Options
Trustee Furutani indicated that he has discussed with Chancellor Young the possibility of creating a television
program regarding community college activities and actions by the Board at the various campuses.
Dr. Linda Spink discussed HCTV, the LAHC television station, which broadcasts two shows produced by LAHC
students and staff—one of which is entitled “President’s Roundtable.” She recommended that the format from
“President’s Roundtable” be utilized for the new program and that the topics include higher education issues such
as the Community College Initiative.
Trustee Furutani indicated that he has been looking into the possibility of broadcasting the program on CityView
Channel 35.

Dr. Adriana Barrera indicated that she would follow up on this possibility and present a report at a future External
Affairs Committee meeting.
Dr. Spink indicated that she could schedule a meeting with two of the Board members on one of the following
dates to demonstrate the HCTV station taping process:
Monday, May 7, 2007 at 1 p.m.
Monday, May 14, 2007 at 12 p.m.
Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 12 p.m.
Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 12 p.m.
Trustee Furutani recommended that Dr. Barrera discuss ideas for the television program with Trustee Pearlman,
who has a great deal of experience in the broadcasting field.
Marketing Update
Copies of documents entitled “Spring 2007 Comparisons” and “College Marketing Campaigns for spring 2007”
were distributed.
Ms. Daphne Congdon summarized the document as it relates to Spring 2007 census enrollment and total credit
headcount for each college in comparison with Spring 2005 and Spring 2006.
She introduced Mr. David Acosta of Grupo Aviso.
Ms. Congdon and Mr. Acosta discussed the District’s 2007 marketing campaign.
Ms. Congdon indicated that the District is looking into advertising on radio stations to market its colleges. She
indicated that video testimonials relating to each of the campuses will be posted on the District’s website.

New Business
Mr. McCallum announced that the Community College Initiative has qualified for the November 2007 ballot.
