MA 113 Calculus III Spring, 2000 – 2001 Section 08 7th Period Crapo Hall G-313 Instructor: R. G. Lautzenheiser Office: Crapo Hall, G-309 Telephone: ext 8394 Office Hours: See schedule at http://www.rose-hulman.edu/~lautzenh/Pages/schedule.html or email for an appointment at roger.lautzenheiser@rose-hulman.edu Text: Calculus by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards Coverage: We will be covering material from Chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and little from chapter 9. Class Structure: The first few minutes will be devoted to answering your questions over the homework and the reading. Also it is during this time that quizzes will be given - either announced or unannounced. During the remainder of the hour, I will either present some new material or you will be working in pairs on a Maple worksheet. Please look at our class web page to see if you need to bring your computer (only one of the pair needs to have a computer). You can get to our class page by going to http://www.rose-hulman.edu/~lautzenh/courses/ma113.0001/113frame.htm Class Grade: Your numerical grade will be determined by the following parts of the course listed below. Your letter grade will then be based on a scale very close to the 90-80-70-60 scale. Plus (+) grades are often given as a reward for doing better on the final than your numerical score would indicate (e.g. your numerical score is 73 but your final exam score was 85% - probably your letter grade would be C+). Please feel free to email me questions at any time. I check my email often, so getting an email response will usually be quick. Daily Homework (7%). Daily homework assignments are due at the beginning of the period (put your paper on a neat pile at the front of the room). In the upper right hand corner of the first page of each daily assignment, put your box number, your name, and the assignment number in this order and vertically. If all three pieces of information are not there and the assignment is not stapled with a proper staple, the grader will not look at your paper. The grader will give you a point for each problem you do (note that you are to show your work – an answer without work will receive no points). The grader will NOT grade the individual exercises - I will usually assign problems with answers in the back of the book. I will use 95% of the total number of homework exercises for the total. Your numerical score for this part will be Min (Your Total / (0.95*Total) * 7, 7) where Total is the total number of homework problems assigned and Your Total is the number you do. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE HOMEWORK ACCEPTED. DON’T EVEN ASK!! Quizzes etc. (18%). In addition to having a few announced quizzes, I will also have unannounced quizzes. In particular, when there are no questions over the assigned reading, I may have a short quiz over that material. Your numerical score for this part will be Min (Your Total / (0.95*Total) * 18, 18) where Total is the total number of quiz points and Your Total is your quiz score. No Make Up for Quizzes If you have a legitimate excuse for missing a quiz, your quiz grade will be determined by your final exam percentage. Two Class Exams (each 25%). The first exam will before midterm and the second exam will probably be Thursday of 9th week. No Make Up for Exams If you have a legitimate excuse for missing an exam, your exam grade will be determined by your final exam percentage. Final Exam (25%) Attendance: I expect you to be in class. My attendance policy is the same as the school’s official policy – see Page 3 of RHIT’s Academic Rules and Procedures. Classroom Etiquette: 1) Questions are encouraged. Please feel free to ask questions at any time of the class period. Ask about what is taking place, what you read the previous night, … ask, ask, ask!! 2) Everyone should be respectful of everyone else. 3) Please do not annoy me or others during the class period by reading the thorn, finishing a paper for another class, talking continuously, playing games on your laptop, checking email, etc etc 4) Always willing to add to the list….
