UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA January WILMINGTON 7, 2008 Dr. C. Sue Combs Chairman, University Curriculum Committee University of North Carolina Wilmington 601 South College Road Wilmington, NC 28403-5956 Dr. Combs Presented for review by the UCC is a course being renumbered in the Bachelor of Science in Professional Nursing Program. This course was previously approved by the UCC as the Oral Communication Competency requirement for the SON. The original course number was NSG 333 Leadership and Management in Nursing. The new course number is NSG 406 Leadership and Management in Nursing. There is no change in the course description, course credit hours, or course objectives or other requirements. Implementation of the course at the Junior Year (NSG 333) demonstrated that students were not developmentally prepared to achieve the learning outcomes without significant facilitation, intervention, and support of the faculty. At the Senior Year, students benefit from the knowledge, skills, and experiences of the Junior Year. Students are able to demonstrate the learning outcomes with confidence, skill, efficiency, and proficiency. This is a course that typically appears in the Senior Year of the curriculum in nursing programs nationwide. We, therefore, acknowledge the need to renumber and sequence the course as a part of the senior experience. Thank you for your consideration of this "renumbered" course as the Oral Communication Competency for the Bachelor of Science in Professional Nursing. We wish to implement this change in Fall 2008. Sincerely, ~~~ Associate cc: Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Virginia w. Adams, Dean Gayle Cooke, Academic Affairs OFFICE SCHOOL OF NURSING OF THE ASSOCIA TE DEAN FOR ACADEMiC AFFAIRS
