We are pleased to present some of the top speakers in the field of writing in 3 strands. DON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM OUTSTANDING EXPERTS! Additional Sessions will focus on the following strands with sessions for K-5 and 6-12 teachers in each session time slot. STRAND Topics you may learn 1. Teaching Writing Skills— Without Killing the Writer 2. Audience, Purpose, Publishing, and Power You will learn how to teach writing skills in new, engaging, innovative, and (dare we say) fun ways. In particular, you will learn methods for teaching writing skills in the context of writing including: spelling, word study, grammar, punctuation, form/style Writing is a very powerful way to say something about the world. Sessions in this strand address power writers have to inform and influence. Authentic writing means authentic audiences, for a real purpose, and publishing in the best way to inform, entertain or influence the audience. Without publishing, science isn’t science; without publishing students have no voice; without publishing, ideas remain private. Publishing no longer refers to just on paper; video, theatre, new digital and networked mediums, books and magazines may be explored in this strand. Texts vary in design techniques and features of texts. Note: Choosing a strand will not limit you from attending any session you choose. 3. Genres Take Form from their Purpose “Story” is still king! Sessions will examine how narrative is used effectively and creatively in all types of writing like journalism, science writing, documentaries, poetry, sports writing, etc. Writing without print— presenters share writing forms that don’t have the printed word at the center: podcasts, video, comics/graphic novels, photo essays, documentaries, etc. Informational and non-fiction writing take on many forms Opinion and Arguments give students influence over others Experience the beauty of poetry writing and the sense of feeling it gives to both the writer and reader.
