Forthediseasestatescovered,thestudentsshouldbeableto:
• Demonstrate knowledge of the medicinal chemistry, pharmacological mechanism of action and related
pharmaceuticaltopicsofselectedmedicationsandmedicationclassesusedtotreateye,ear,nose,throat,and
dermatologicaldisorders.
• Recommendappropriatenon-pharmacologictherapybaseduponpatient-anddiseasespecificinformation.
• Recommendappropriatepharmacotherapeuticregimensbaseduponpatient-,disease-,anddrugspecific
information.
• Developaplanformonitoringthepharmacotherapeuticregimenforefficacy,toxicity,andadverseeffects.
• Developaplanforeducatingpatientsandcaregiversregardingtheappropriateuse,safety,andefficacyof
medications.
• Evaluatetheappropriatenessofpatient-specifictherapyandmodifytherapyasneeded.
VI. CourseTopics
Thiscoursewilladdressthefollowingtopics:glaucoma,maculardegeneration,dryeyedisease,prescription
labelingforvisually-impairedpatients,allergicrhinitis,urticaria,allergyshots,acne,psoriasis,eczema,dermatitis,
drug-inducedskinreactions,andnailinfections.
VII. InstructionalMethodsandActivities
Instructionalmethodsmayinclude:traditionallectures,internet-basedlectureswithin-classdiscussion,distance
learning,in-classdiscussionofpatientcases,smallgroupdiscussion,problem-basedlearning,case-basedlearning,
andindividualprojects.Quizzesorothergradedin-classexercisesmayalsobeadministered.
VIII. EvaluationandGradeAssignment
• Therewillbe3exams(includingthefinalexam).Therewillbe10pointsperlecture(or20pointsperclass
period).
• ExamSoftwillbeusedtoadministerexams;therefore,allstudentsarerequiredtohaveaccesstothe
mostcurrentversionofthesoftware.
• Quizzesmaybegiven,announcedorunannounced,asdeemednecessarybyeachfacultymember.Thepoints
availablefromthesequizzesandassignmentswillbeaddedintothedenominatorforthetotalnumberof
pointsavailablefromthecourse,andthecoursegradedeterminedaccordingly.
• Allexamswillbefrom10:00-11:50,givenduringtheregularlyscheduledclassperiods.
• ExamdatesarescheduledinthecoursesyllabusandwillonlybechangedintheeventofaUniversityclosure.
• Examsmaybemultiplechoice,fillintheblank,short-answer,caseorscenariobaseddiscussion,essay,orany
otherformatdeemednecessarybythelecturersandcoursecoordinator.
• Normallabvalueswillbeprovidedforallquestions,unlessotherwisespecifiedduringclass.Labvaluesthat
arespecifictoaparticulardiseasestatewillnotbeprovided.
• Informationacquiredfrompreviouslecturesinthecourseandfromothercoursesintheprofessional
pharmacycurriculummaybeneededinpreparingfortheseexams.
• Examsmaycovermaterial(readings,outsideassignments)notcoveredinclass.

StudentSuccess–EarlyInterventionPolicy
Studentsscoring<70%onanyexamandanoverallexamaverage<70%(excludesquizzes,assignments,bonus,etc.)
willberequiredtosubmittothecoordinatorwritten,narrativeresponsestoselectlectureobjectivesthatwillbe
providedwithin24hoursofthepostingoftheirexamgradetoMoodle.Theseobjectiveswillbeintheformofa
Moodleassignmentandrepresentunit-orlecture-levelobjectivestobetesteduponinthenextscheduledcourse
exam.
Writtenresponsesmustbesubmittednolaterthanonecalendarweekbeforethenextscheduledexam.Responses
mustbewrittenincompletesentencesandmaynotbecopiedorpastedfromanysource,includingclassnotes,
treatmentguidelines,textbooks,oranyinternetsite.Submissionsfoundtocontainresponsesthathavenotbeen
writteninastudent’sownwordswillbeconsideredafailuretosubmit.
Inaddition,studentswillberequiredtorevieweachfailedexam’sExamSoft-generatedmisseditemreportwiththe
instructorresponsibleforeachsectionofmaterial.Thediscussionshouldincludethestudent’sreasoningforthe
