EDN 409-257 Practicum in Music

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students are assigned full-time to practicum sites in music. The setting is selected from
elementary general music, middle or high school chorus, band or orchestra, with
consideration for the student's performance concentration and career goals. During the
course students will engage in a variety of instructional activities supervised by the
partnership teacher and a university supervisor. Responsibilities will increase until a fulltime teaching load is assumed by the student.
OBJECTIVES:
• Maintain ethical and professional standards for a teacher in the public schools of
North Carolina
• Demonstrate content knowledge
• Develop lesson plans with appropriate objectives, strategies, sequences, and
evaluation procedures
• Demonstrate the ability to achieve educational objectives with all learners
• Demonstrate an effective practice of reflection and adjustment in teaching practices
• Demonstrate appropriate and effective classroom management procedures
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and staff
EVALUATION:
Ratings of performance will be given based on the Certificate of Teaching Capacity and
correlated with the Internship Performance Scale and Watson College of Education
Conceptual Framework. Evaluation criteria will include:
Professionalism
Classroom Climate/Culture
Instruction
Evaluation/Assessment
Impact on Student Learning
Grades will be assigned in a holistic manner, and plus and minus grades may be given at
the discretion of the supervisor.
A grade of A is earned if the student has:
• a rating of “Accomplished” in a majority of the indicators on the rating scale
• no ratings of “Inadequate” on any of the indicators
• evidence of exceptional strength in performance and understanding of teaching
and learning
A grade of B is earned if the student has:
• a rating of “Developed” in a majority of the indicators on the rating scale
• no ratings of “Inadequate” on any of the indicators
• clear evidence of growth in performance and understanding of teaching and
learning
A grade of C is earned if the student has:
• a rating of “Emerging” in a majority of the indicators on the rating scale
• no ratings of “Inadequate” on any of the indicators
• some evidence of growth in performance and understanding of teaching and
learning
A grade of D is earned if the student has:
• completed student teaching and has not earned a grade of A, B, or C.
A grade of D is not acceptable for recommendation by UNCW.
The teacher intern will be evaluated and recommended for licensure if all areas of the
Certification of Teaching Capacity are MET.
The teacher intern will be evaluated and will not be recommended for licensure if any of
the areas of the Certification of Teaching Capacity are NOT MET.
