ACPEstatesthatservicelearningis“astructuredlearningexperienceperformedby
studentsincollaborationwithcommunitypartners.Suchexperiencesrequireclearly
definedobjectives,carefulpreparation,purposefulreflection,andengageddiscussion
withfellowstudents,facultymembers,and–ifpossible–membersoftheserved
community.”InanefforttopartnerwithourSchoolofPharmacy’sstudent
organizations,thispolicyandformhavebeendevelopedtoallowstudentstoearn
servicelearningcreditforparticipatinginorganizationprojectsthatalignwiththe
School’sgoalsandobjectivesforservicelearning.Servicelearningprojectsshouldmeet
themajorityofthefollowingobjectives:
• Meetacommunityneed
• Establishorenhancearelationshipbetweenthecommunityandtheacademic
institution
• Helpfostercivicandprofessionalresponsibilityandthedevelopmentofasense
ofcaringforothers
• Areintegratedintotherequiredacademiccurriculum
• Providestructuredtimetoreflectontheservicelearningexperience
• Enhancewhatistaughtinthedidacticcurriculumbyextendingstudentlearning
beyondtheclassroomandintothecommunity
• Provideopportunitiesforinteractionwithotherhealthprofessionalstudentsand
practitioners
• Attempttobalancetheservicethatisprovidedandthelearningthattakesplace
Atthebeginningofeachsemester,interestedstudentorganizationsshouldsubmit
theServiceLearningRequestformtotheDirectorofStudentAffairsbytheendofthe
sixthweekofthesemester.Theapprovalprocessisoutlinedbelow.
• InterestedstudentorganizationsshouldsubmittheServiceLearningRequest
formwithanattachedlistofmemberswhowouldliketoparticipateinthe
projecttotheirAdvisorforapproval.
o Advisorsshouldrevieweachprojectindividuallyandverifythatthe
proposedprojectmayserveasservicelearning.
o Advisorsareexpectedtoconfirmthatallstudentsapprovedto
participatehavebeenproperlytrainedintechniquesandfunctionof
equipmentused.
o Advisorsshouldalsoreviewanymaterialsmembersplantodistributeor
presentattheevent.
o Advisorsshouldverifythatallsuppliesandmaterialsrequiredare
present.
• AULMSchoolofPharmacyfacultymemberorapprovedpreceptormustbe
presentateachevent.Anystudentengagedinthepracticeofpharmacyas
definedbytheLouisianaBoardofPharmacysuchasMTM,counseling,etc.must
havealicensedpharmacistpresent.
• Oncetheeventisapprovedbytheorganization’sadvisor,aServiceLearning
RequestFormwithanattachedlistofparticipatingmembersshouldbeturnedin
totheDirectorofStudentAffairsforfinalapproval.
•

Iftheorganization’sadvisorwillnotbepresentattheevent,theDirectorof
StudentAffairswillmakearrangementsforaneventsupervisor.
Thestudentattendancesheetandtimelogmustbecompletedandsignedby
theparticipatingstudentsandapprovedbytheeventsupervisor.Theevent
supervisorshouldreturntheattendancetotheOSPA.
Studentsshouldcompletethestandardservicelearningreflectionlocatedonthe
OfficeofStudentandProfessionalAffairswebpagenolaterthanoneweekafter
completionoftheexperience.
Allstudentsthatarenotparticipatinginapprovedprojectswillbeassignedtothe
OfficeofStudentandProfessionalAffairs(OSPA)sponsoredprojectbytheDirectorof
StudentAffairs.Eachstudentmustspendaminimumofonehourpersemester
participatinginaservicelearningproject.Duringthishour,studentsmusthavedirect
patientand/orhealthcarerelatedinteraction,whichdoesnotincludesettingupand
cleaningupbeforeoraftertheproject.
EvaluationandGradeAssignmentforServiceLearning
ServiceLearningisaSchoolofPharmacyrequirement.Allstudentsarenowrequiredto
participate.Inordertoreceivecreditfortheservice-learningproject,allrequirements
mustbemet.Thefollowing(ifapplicabletotheassignedproject),andanyother
requirementsdeemednecessarybytheservice-learningcoordinatormustbemetin
ordertoreceivecredit.

Arrive10minutespriortoassignedtime.
Successfullycomplete1fullhourofanapprovedServiceLearningevent.These
eventsareofferedthroughtheULMSchoolofPharmacyorganizationsandthe
OfficeofStudentandProfessionalAffairs(OSPA).
Completethereflectivewritingassignmentwithinoneweekofcompletingthe
project.
ProvideaUniversity-approvedexcuseforanymissedprojects.
Participateinallgroupmeetingsandplanningifprojectisagroupproject.
Forgroupprojects,completeapeerevaluationformonallmembersofthe
grouptowhichyouareassigned.

Allrequirementsmet–fullcredit.Allrequirementsmeansthat1fullhour
ofapprovedServiceLearninghasbeensuccessfullycompleted,andthe
reflectivewritingexercisehasmetcriteriaforsuccessfulcompletionand
submission.
ExcusedabsencefromascheduledServiceLearningevent–opportunity
tomakeup.
UnexcusedabsencefromascheduledServiceLearningevent–Student
willberequiredtocomplete2hoursofanapprovedeventduringthe
samesemester.
ServiceLearningmustbecompletedbythelastdayofclasses.
FailuretocompleteallrequirementsofServiceLearningwillresultinthe
studentnotbeallowtoregisterforclassesthefollowingsemesterorif
theyhavealreadyregisteredtheirclasseswillbedroppeduntilthe
ServiceLearningrequirementshavebeencompleted.
