RE:
Approval requested for Edwards School of Business Curriculum
Changes
The Faculty of the Edwards School of Business is asking the Academic Programs Committee of
Council to approve the following:
1. New Finance course:
COMM 465.3 – Financial Modelling with Spreadsheets. This course applies
spreadsheet software to analyze corporate and investment finance theory. Consideration
will be given to good model building practices such as model structure, cell reference,
array labeling, unit of measurement choice, function usage, and macro usage. Particular
attention will be paid to the topics of decision analysis, sensitivity analysis, estimation
and forecasting, optimization, and simulation.
Prerequisites: COMM 363 and COMM 367
Proposed instructor:
Craig Wilson
Rationale: This course applies spreadsheet software to analyse corporate and
investment finance theory. COMM 465 will help students develop a deeper
understanding of financial theory and applications. It will also better prepare them for
the workplace, since spreadsheet analysis is a standard tool used in the financial
industry.
Approval Process:
Edwards School of Business Faculty – approved December 12, 2008
ESB Undergraduate Curriculum Committee – approved November 25, 2008
Department of Finance and Operations Management – approved November 18, 2008

minimum of 3 credits from 5 of the 6 groups and a maximum of 9 credits from
each of Groups 1 - 5 (and at least 3 credits must be an the 400 level).

COMM 303.3 was removed as part of our core curriculum in 2006. ESB no longer offers
any sections of this class. COMM 300.3 was last offered in the winter of 2007.
BTMG 400.6 was the honours course that was an option within the Biotechnology
Management Major. As the major is currently going through the elimination process
(deletion not yet approved by Academic Programs Committee), there is no reason to
keep BTMG 400.6 in the course calendar.
