Veterinary Biomedical Sciences
VBMS 439.2 – Research Projects
Total Hours: Tutorial 24 hr
Prerequisite: Approval by the WCVM Curriculum Committee.
Calendar description: This course is to allow Veterinary Medical students to undertake research
projects of specified duration their program.
Rationale for this course: Many students in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program undertake
summer research which is not reflected on their transcripts. Our students also do not have a
structured opportunity to conduct research during the academic year. Specific research projects
also help our students to obtain coveted residency position in an area. Therefore, this elective

opportunities to do research at any time during their DVM program.

Veterinary Microbiology
VTMC 441.1 – Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases
Total Hours: Lecture 6 hr; Seminar 6 hr
Restrictions: Successful completion of Year 2 of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.
Calendar description: A course designed to familiarize students with the reasons new diseases
emerge in human and animal populations, the molecular, microbiological and epidemiological
tools used to investigate such outbreaks, and strategies to combat them. The course will include
didactic lectures as well as seminars on selected emerging disease outbreaks.
Rationale for this course: In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in new diseases
that have emerged in humans and other animals. For humans, most of these diseases are due
to spill over of pathogens from domestic and wild animals into people. It is therefore important
for veterinarians to understand the ecological and socio-economical factors that contribute to
such spill-overs, the tools used to recognize and investigate such outbreaks and the strategies
used to minimize such incidents.

career.
