We are excited about our next meeting on Saturday, November 14, at 8:45am. Are you interested in hearing about all the wonderful dual language and immersion initiatives that are happening in our community and state? Would you like to know more about the dual language and immersion models that have been adopted by New Hanover County Schools? Would you like to learn more about how you and your school can link with your colleagues abroad to expand students’ language opportunities? If so, or if you simply want to connect with an outstanding group of language professionals at the K-12 and college levels, then come on out to our meeting! (And invite your colleagues!) Here’s a preview of November’s meeting (with approximate times): 8:45 Registration and refreshments If you have not already done so, please bring your money to pay dues at this time. Yearly dues are $20 ($10 for full-time students). [Note: You do not have to be a member to attend our meetings.] 9:00 Business meeting and announcements Please bring announcements of school changes, cultural events, workshops and conferences, etc. We will hear a report from the treasurer and discuss committee work. 9:30 Presentations Learn about dual language and full immersion programs in our community and find out what you can do to be an advocate for these programs or even get one started at your own school. All meetings are held in Leutze Hall 136 and adjacent rooms. Attendees may park in Lot G (north of Leutze Hall). More information about each program will be distributed in subsequent newsletters. As always we will keep track of attendance for the year and will distribute certificates verifying attendance at meetings. These may be used to request CEU credit from your school system. • • February 6, 8:45am – 12:00pm o This meeting will be sponsored by Vista Higher Learning. Look out for our January newsletter, which will contain more information regarding the program and registration. April 16, 8:45am – 12:00pm o Featured presenter: Dr. Jeff Ertzberger from the Watson College of Education will give an engaging workshop on the creative use of technology in the world language classroom. o We’ll also have our world-famous CFFLC Raffle, which is always a good time! EXCITING STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY FOR SPANISH TEACHERS Amanda Boomershine and L. J. Randolph will be leading a study abroad trip to Santiago, Dominican Republic, during the summer of 2016 (July 5-22). The trip was designed specifically for practicing Spanish teachers at the K-12 level and graduate students (or advanced undergraduates) of Spanish. Students will have the opportunity to earn 3.0 credit hours at the graduate or undergraduate level by taking one of the following two courses: 1) Teaching Spanish for Transformation and Social Justice or 2) Spanish Sociolinguistics and Variation. The program also includes a group service-learning project, excursions to several Dominican cities, opportunities for immersion and interaction with various communities, and much more. FLANC DESIGN THE LOGO CONTEST The Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) is excited to have its 50th anniversary conference in Durham, NC, October 6-8, 2016. To kick off the celebration, the organization would like to invite students of the CFFLC to design the conference logo for the following theme: 50 Years and Beyond: Empowerment, Transformation, and Social Justice The chosen design will be featured on the cover of the conference program and will also be used with promotional materials. The student designer will receive a $100 cash reward. This opportunity is available exclusively to K-12 students of members of the CFFLC. Please share this wonderful opportunity with your students. The design for this past year’s conference is copied below. We are hoping to get many wonderful, creative entries to help us celebrate FLANC’s golden anniversary. Randolph at lj.randolph@flanc.org with the following information: Student’s Name, School, Grade, World Language Teacher. *** All entries must be received by Monday, November 16. *** UNCW GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP EXTENSION Good news! The deadline for the UNCW graduate and undergraduate scholarships has been extended to December 11, 2015. The scholarships will be awarded at our February 6 meeting to coincide with the program sponsored by Vista Higher Learning. We will award two undergraduate scholarships and one graduate scholarship ($300 each). We depend on your dues to help with miscellaneous expenses and with the scholarships. Thanks for your support! SPONSORSHIP: CFFLC is sponsored by the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. SCHOLARSHIPS: Our scholarship program continues to be a success. We awarded three scholarships to UNCW students last year and one to a graduating senior in high school for a total of $1100. CFFLC is proud to announce that scholarships awarded since the inception of the program in 1995 total $13,525. This includes $300 given by Vista Higher Learning in November 2014. All other funds have been raised by the membership of CFFLC.
