NEWSLETTER! Volume 28 Number 1 September 2015 **************************************************************** WELCOME BACK! The CFFLC is excited to begin its 28th (!) year of wonderful professional development and networking opportunities for local teachers. The planning committee has been hard at work putting together yet another spectacular program this year, so you will not want to miss any opportunities! In addition to our efforts to support the professional development of local teachers at the K-12, community college, and university levels, we will continue providing scholarships to high school and university students who have demonstrated excellence in language study. We will also support the UNCW Intercultural Festival (to be held in February 2016) as we have done in the past. Finally, we will end the program year with our world-famous Fundraising Raffle! We hope you will plan now to attend as many events as possible. Everyone is encouraged to forward a copy of this newsletter with a personal invitation to attend to someone else in your school or county. If you are the only person who attends from your school or county, please send personally or ask a coordinator to send an e-mail with an announcement and this newsletter to your list of World Languages/Foreign Languages and ESL teachers. Consider especially new teachers or teachers new to our part of the state. Our membership and participation is holding steady, but we would be delighted to have new faces and new ideas. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014-2015 Kim Eadie (New Hanover High), Kayce Smith (South Brunswick Middle), and Joann Mount (UNCW) present the undergraduate and graduate scholarship awards to Megan Koelb, Caroline Hocutt, and Yamile Uceda (not pictured) at the November meeting. Megan and Caroline are recent teacher licensure graduates who are currently employed as Spanish and French teachers in North Carolina! Nora L. Jones (Vista Higher Learning) gives a workshop on using authentic media at the November 2014 meeting of the CFFLC. Page 1 of 4 HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014-215 (CONT.) Yoko Kano (UNCW), Rachel Hatfield (Cape Fear Academy), and Kim Eadie (New Hanover High) entertain visitors at the CFFLC table during the Intercultural Festival in February. L. J. Randolph (UNCW) introduces the keynote speaker (Carmen Scoggins) at the 2015 FLANC Spring Conference. CFFLC helped sponsor this event on UNCW’s campus. It was the most wellattended FLANC spring conference ever! An emotional Joann Mount (UNCW) accepts a retirement gift from the CFFLC membership. Dr. Mount retired from UNCW in June of this year after beginning her career at the institution in 1977. We are ecstatic that she will continue to be an active member of the Collaborative during her retirement! 2015-2016 PROGRAM DATES Please go ahead and mark your calendars for this year’s meetings. All meetings are held in Leutze Hall 136 and adjacent rooms. Attendees may park in Lot G (north of Leutze Hall). More information about each program will be distributed in subsequent newsletters.
