Competitiveness at the 80th Percentile The UNC Board of Governors adopted a salary compensation philosophy that targets the 80th percentile by discipline and rank for relevant peer institutions. Salary ranges are constructed according to a model with the 80th percentile as the target salary. The range spread is 60% from range minimum to maximum. Chart 11 – Comparison of Peer 80th Percentile by Discipline All Ranks Combined – Percentage Order (page 22) The chart compares UNCW average salaries by discipline, all ranks combined, to the 80th percentile of the peer group. By using this data, progress towards reaching the targeted goal of the 80th percentile of our peers can be evaluated. Creative Writing, at 110.6%, is the highest among six (6) disciplines that have met or exceeded our targeted goal of the 80th percentile of our peers with all ranks combined. Of the remaining UNCW disciplines, the average salaries are below the 80th percentile of our peers with English Language and Literature at the lowest level of 72.0% of the 80th percentile. In Table D, the UNCW average salary compared to the peer 80th percentile has progressively declined for the past three years to 95.9% of the overall peer 80th percentile in FY11-12. Table E reflects a three year historical trend of labor market competitiveness by rank as compared to the 80th percentile of our peers. We continue to fall below our strategic goal to compensate or hire at the 80th percentile at each rank. The number of disciplines in which individual ranks are above the 90% of market value at the 80th percentile has decreased. This corresponds to a similar reduction in overall comparison of the average salaries to our peer institutions in Chart 4. 6 Table F - Number of Ranks Below 90% of 80th Percentile by Rank Competitiveness of Disciplines @ Market 80th Percentile Professors Associate Professors Assistant Professors (>1 yr) New Asst Professors (<1 yr) Lecturers / Instructors FY06-07 # < 90% of 80th Percentile Market 9 10 11 1 FY07-08 # < 90% of 80th Percentile Market 12 13 14 10 12 FY08-09 # < 90% of 80th Percentile Market 9 14 15 1 19 FY10-11 # < 90% of 80th Percentile Market 15 12 17 7 16 FY11-12 # < 90% of 80th Percentile 24 23 25 7 18 Report 1: 4-Year Comparison of Faculty Average Salaries by Discipline and Rank (pages 24-34) reflects detailed salary tables for UNCW faculty from 2008 through 2012 from which trend line charts have been prepared.
