SEC 430: Seminar - Leadership, Reflection and Management Practices
Course Description: Co-requisite: SEC 431. Internship Prerequisites: All professional core and
specialty area courses, acceptance into the Watson School of Education, and a 2.70 GPA on all
work attempted at UNCW. Development of instructional skills required for successful teaching
with regard for the particular needs of the student's academic discipline. Designed as a
culmination of professional study and an initiation into the internship and the teaching
profession. Emphasis is given to 1) acquisition of leadership qualities and characteristics, 2)
professional documentation of reflective growth, and 3) integration of effective behavior
management strategies.
Course Objectives
1. Students will design and implement unique lesson plans that are inquiry-orientated,
intellectually stimulating, and developmentally appropriate.
2.
Students will demonstrate knowledge and expertise in a variety of instructional strategies (i.e.
large, traditional high school settings and small learning communities such as Freshman
Academies and Early Colleges).
3.
Students will prepare long and short-term plans to be used during student teaching, taking into
account strong content preparation, effective curriculum design and cross-discipline,
integrated curricula.
4.
Demonstrate leadership in his/her classroom as well as contribute to creating an effective
school learning environment.
5.
Students will demonstrate knowledge, comprehension and application of professional standards
(21st Century Standards).
6.
Demonstrate competence in using technology to enhance teaching and learning.
7.
Students will document their achievement of academic or content standards (NCSCS-content
area).
Conceptual Framework:
This course is designed to focus on key components of the Watson School of Education
conceptual framework: The WSE develops highly competent professionals to serve in
educational leadership roles. All educators must use data for decisions, reflect upon their
practice, exemplify their commitment to professional standards, implement appropriate
communication strategies, and strive to meet the needs of all learners. Assignments in this
course will assist you in preparing you to be a competent professional and a leader.

Course Requirements:
1. Attendance is required by all students.
2. Students are not to be late for class.
3. Participate in class activities.
4. Complete all assignments as detailed in the requirements section.
