research problems, sampling methods, data analysis, and interpretation, and planning of
evaluation studies. Includes computer applications in recreation services and use of computers to
conduct and present research and evaluation.
Description of assignment(s) that involve basic computer skills including knowledge of campus
use policies, facility with standard applications, and awareness of legal and ethical issues:
Students will conduct a literature review, and collect and evaluate both qualitative and
quantitative data in an applied recreation setting. The assignment requires the student to master
the tools of online searching. Students will demonstrate competency finding resources using
Randall Library’s computerized tools along with the use of Interlibrary Loan. They will be
required to learn to identify reliable on-line resources, and to use Randal Library’s indices and
databases in their search. Throughout all stages of the project, the student will work closely with
the reference librarian who specializes in the area.
In addition, students will complete courses on the UNCW Skill Port training software to learn
database management, and in creating personal web pages.
Students, after collecting data, input the information into a database and analyze the data.
Students also create personal web pages and place them on the UNCW server, to act as an on-
line resume. This is done under the supervision of the technology assistance staff and the
instructor.
How will the computer competency be evaluated?
Computer competency will be evaluated on the depth, breadth, and quality of computerized
research for the literature reviews; the accuracy of the database spreadsheets, and the quality of
web pages. Moreover, each Skill Port course has a knowledge skills test requires 80% to pass.
