Description of proposed program changes:
1. Change the number of hours required for the major to 61 from 67. This is necessary to
bring the program in line with the policy in the UNCW Faculty Handbook.
2. Development of a New Option, Recreational Sport Leadership, with in the Parks and
Recreation Management major in the Department of Health and Applied Human
Sciences. This option is being developed to meet the growing professional needs and
career opportunities in the area of recreational sports management, Additionally, the
option has a strong focus on campus recreation which will support service learning and
employment opportunities for students in UNCW’s Campus Recreation program. Four
new courses (REC 392 Organization and Leadership of Recreational Sports REC, 393
Campus Recreation and Sports Administration, REC 394 Recreational Sports and Fitness
Facility Operation, and REC 395 Instructional Methods in Recreation Sports) were
approved for this option for Fall 2009 and are currently begin taught. Faculty are in place
to teach these courses and advise students in this option. No new resources are required.
