Teaching Fellows Program University of North Carolina Wilmington TFP 204 Leadership Conflict, Ethics and Civility in Education Fall 2010 Catalog Description: (1) Prerequisite: Formal enrollment in the Teaching Fellows Program or consent of director. The course is designed to focus on theory and practice of leadership, issues of ethics, civility cohesiveness, trust, motivation, vision, and goals. Students will identify and examine conflict management, assessment, and decision-making goals. Conceptual Framework: This course is designed to focus on key components of the Watson School of Education’s conceptual framework: The WSE develops highly competent professionals to serve in educational leadership roles. TFP 201 supports this framework through discussions, class activities, readings, projects and evaluations. These projects afford students the opportunity to develop the following competencies: Informed data driven decision making o Reflective practice o Commitment to ethical and professional standards o Technology integration o Ability to meet needs of diverse learners o Knowledge and use of appropriate communication strategies Individual student growth in these areas will result in educational practice that positively impacts learning. Course Objectives: Identify real-world leadership situations in education. Identify issues of diversity perspectives in real-world leadership situations in education. Integrate previous knowledge of education, leadership, and self, with course content. Demonstrate personal ethics, including the values and cultures that contribute to your ethical position through course assignments. Demonstrate appropriate and effective use of critical thinking skills and self-analysis in course assignments. Demonstrate effective use of organizational, writing, oral, and technology skills that are appropriate for course assignments. CLASS ATTENDANCE & GUIDELINES 1. As a student in the Teaching Fellows Program, it is expected that you will conduct yourself in an appropriate manner. This includes, but is not limited to, full participation in all activities, communicating civilly, accepting the diversity of opinions in class, and treating everyone with the courtesy you desire. 2. Every scheduled class is mandatory. Absences will result in the loss of participation points. 3. Students, who arrive late or leave class prior to dismissal, will be considered absent unless prior arrangements are made. 4. More than one class absence will result in the lowering of your grade by a full letter, two class absences will lower one’s grade by two full letters, and three absences will result in failure. 5. Due to the participatory nature of this class, excessive absences for documented emergency and medical reasons may result in a grade of “Incomplete” so alternative environments for participation can be arranged the following semester. 6. None of the reasons above excuse you from fulfilling all course requirements. 7. Laptops are welcome in class as long as they are used for note-taking and research for this class. Surfing the internet, checking email, or managing your social networking pages during class time is considered an inappropriate use technology and will result in a loss of a half-letter grade. 8. Cell phones and pagers should be turned off/on mute when class starts as they are disruptive during class time.
