PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE IN PROGRAM UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE University of North Carolina at Wilmington Wilmington, NC 28403 Type of program change proposed (check all that apply) X Establishment, dissolution, division, or consolidation of academic departments or other degree-granting entities Establishment, dissolution, or revision of academic degrees, including majors, minors, and certificate programs Policies for maximum and minimum hours required for majors, minors, and certificates Total number of hours required for graduation University-wide competency requirements (other than basic studies, oral communication intensive, or computer competency) Course prefixes Curricular conflicts between schools and/or colleges Other general curricular policies which have total university impact Description of proposed program change: Change degree name to: BA in Criminology The current degree name is a “BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice.” We are seeking approval to simplify the degree name by dropping the reference to Criminal Justice. We plan to continue offering two options under the BA in Criminology: the (general) Criminology Option and the (applied) Criminal Justice Option. Rationale: The proposed name change to BA in Criminology is a more accurate reflection of our curriculum and faculty expertise. The academic study of criminology is theoretically broad and methodologically sophisticated. Criminology actually subsumes the more applied field of criminal justice. We believe the name change will mesh well with our attempts to elevate the academic standards of the program.
