Identification of research problems, sampling methods, data analysis, and interpretation, and planning of evaluation studies. Proposed Catalogue Description: Methods of research in the fields of recreation. Identification of research problems, sampling methods, data analysis, and interpretation, and planning of evaluation studies. Includes computer applications in recreation services and use of computers to conduct and present research and evaluation. Description of assignment(s) that involve basic computer skills including knowledge of campus use policies, facility with standard applications, and awareness of legal and ethical issues: Students will conduct a literature review, and collect and evaluate both qualitative and . quantitative data in an applied recreation setting. The assignment requires the student to master the tools of online searching. Students will demonstrate competency finding resources using Randall Library's computerized tools along with the use of Interlibrary Loan. They will be required to learn to identify reliable on-line resources, and to use Randal Library'S indices and databases in their search. Throughout all stages of the project, the student will work closely with the reference librarian who specializes in the area. In addition, students will complete courses on the UNCW Skill Port training software to learn database management, and in creating personal web pages. Students, after collecting data, input the information into a database and analyze the data. Students also create personal web pages and place them on the UNCW server, to act as an online resume. This is done under the supervision of the technology assistance staff and the instructor. How will the computer competency be evaluated? Computer competency will be evaluated on the depth, breadth, and quality of computerized research for the literature reviews; the accuracy of the database spreadsheets, and the quality of web pages. Moreover, each Skill Port course has a knowledge skills test requires 80% to pass. *If changes in the catalogue description are indicated, this proposal must first be approved by the appropriate school or college curriculum committee.
