Scholarship Information and Eligibility
Applications for scholarships awarded by the Department of World Languages and
Cultures are administered by the Office of Financial Aid and are due on March 1 each
year. To apply, go to the following site: http://www.uncw.edu/finaid/scholarships.html.
The following scholarships are awarded to majors in Foreign Languages (French,
German, or Spanish) or outstanding students enrolled in other languages.
1. The Helena R. Cheek Scholarship. This scholarship rewards those who demonstrate
special ability in the area of foreign language study and overall academic excellence.
Two scholarships of $1,175 are awarded to students majoring in a foreign language
(French, German, or Spanish).
2. Text Book Scholarships. In most years, two scholarships of $125 are awarded to
students majoring in a foreign language (French, German, or Spanish).
3. The Department of World Languages and Cultures Academic Scholarship. This
scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates special ability in the area of foreign
language study and overall academic excellence. One scholarship of $500 is awarded.
Students studying any language are eligible to apply for this scholarship—it is not
necessary to major in a foreign language.
4. The Coca-Cola Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to provide assistance to
undergraduate and graduate students majoring in a foreign language (French, German,
or Spanish). Recipients are selected based on character and leadership. Consideration is
also given to candidates who have shown evidence of self-help. Two scholarships of
$700 are awarded in a five-year rotation between English, History, World Languages and
Cultures, and Philosophy and Religion.
5. The Lapaire-Stites French Studies Scholarship. This scholarship acknowledges
academic excellence for students majoring in French. See separate document for more
information and eligibility.
NOTE: These are merit-based scholarships. Recipients will be selected taking into
account only achievement in the area of foreign language study and overall
academic and/or leadership accomplishments.
To apply for these scholarships, the student must:

be enrolled full-time at UNCW.
have declared a major in a foreign language (for the Helena R. Cheek, Text
Book and Coca-Cola Scholarships).
be a student enrolled in any foreign language (for the Department of World
Languages and Cultures Academic Scholarship).

have completed 48 college/university semester credit hours at the time of
application.
have completed a minimum of 24 semester credit hours at UNCW at the time of
application.
have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum 3.3 GPA in the foreign
language major (for the Helena R. Cheek and Text Book Scholarships).
have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum 3.3 GPA in foreign
language courses for majors and non-majors (for the Department of World
Languages and Cultures Academic Scholarship).
IN ADDITION TO INFORMATION REQUESTED ON THE ONLINE
APPLICATION, THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE
THIS APPLICATION. On the Office of Financial Aid site, you will need to
UPLOAD:
1. A current degree audit from SeaWeb.
2. Official transcripts from colleges and universities previously attended.
3. An original essay written in the language studied in which you discuss
experiences you have had with foreign language learning in the past and explain
why you are studying a foreign language and how you plan to use your foreign
language skills and knowledge in the future. (400 words maximum).
By uploading the essay, I attest to the following: “This is entirely my own work. I
have not received help or feedback from anyone—professors, teachers, tutors,
other students, friends, family, etc.—in writing or correcting this essay. I
understand that I may consult dictionaries and textbooks for vocabulary and
grammar.”
