SUPER PHANTOM S2 ROV Built by Deep Ocean Engineering in 1987, and upgraded to high voltage DC Spectrum Series system in 1995, the Phantom S2 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is capable of diving to depths of 300 meters. The ROV is a versatile, highly portable tool, which can be used to support undersea research operations from a variety of platforms. Standard equipment includes: 12X zoom color video camera, digital still camera and strobe, low-light SIT video camera (optional in place of digital still camera), sector scanning sonar, 500 watts of lighting, dual scaling lasers, and a single function manipulator claw. An integrated navigation system displays the geographic and relative position of the support vessel and ROV on geo-referenced charts during operations. All video and digital stills are time referenced to the navigation files so that their exact location is known. Spare wires and payload capability are available for integration of other payloads provided by the science community. Highly skilled, professional pilots maintain the ROV, conduct repairs at sea when necessary, and ensure that the scientific objectives are efficiently performed in a minimal amount of time. The system requires 4.5 KVA of 110 VAC power, a 30-amp/110 volt plug, and a minimal 30-amp breaker. Integration of your equipment or tool package on the Phantom S2 ROV requires advanced communication and planning. The Phantom S2 has been instrumental in ground truth of habitat from multibeam sonar maps in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, Madison/Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA), Tortugas MPA, Florida Middle Grounds MPA, Oculina Habitat Area of Particular Concern (OHAPC), and the proposed MPAs along the South Atlantic coast, just to name a few. The versatility of the ROV allows it to be utilized in a wide variety of scientific endeavors including, but not limited to, fisheries research, search and recovery, mapping hypoxic water masses, multibeam ground truth, organisms can be documented in their natural environment and selectively collected for detailed classification, baseline documentation, animal behavior studies, and education/outreach.
