PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT
The Curriculum in Recreation, Sport Leadership and Tourism Management
prepares students for management of a diversity of recreation, sport, and
travel and tourism settings and for graduate study. The Program is also
NRPA/AALR accredited by the Council on Accreditation. Within the major,
there are three areas of concentration in which a Bachelor of Arts Degree
can be obtained: Travel and Commercial Recreation, Public and Non-Profit
Recreation and Recreational Sport
Leadership.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Curriculum in Recreation, Sport Leadership and Tourism Management
is based not only on classroom experience, but also provides students with
significant experiential education. The Recreation, Sport Leadership and
Tourism Management Program focuses on developing student competencies in administration, budgeting, communications, event and program
planning, conflict resolution, facility and human resource management,
marketing and leadership. As a student you will find yourself being directly
and personally involved with planning special events, programming
activities for youth and adults, creating business and marketing plans,
developing organizational briefs, designing
marketing material, and much more. Career
opportunities include employment with
resorts, hotels/resorts and spas, theme
parks, convention and visitor bureaus,
private recreation clubs, travel agencies,
restaurants, retail companies, boys’ and
girls’ clubs, cruise ships, nonprofit community organizations, by parks and
recreation departments operated by county and municipal governments;
employment by state agencies; employment
by the federal government; and in aquatic
settings and many more.
STUDY ABROAD
The faculty often offers summer study
abroad experiences. Course topics have
included environmental management, cruise
line management, and cultural/heritage
tourism. Students have visited countries such as Italy, Greece, Turkey,
France, Scotland, Germany and Wales.

DERRICK G.S. DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP AND
FUNDRAISER
The Davis scholarship is awarded each
year to a rising senior for academic
excellence and demonstrated leadership
and potential in the industry. To help
fund the scholarship, the Davis Tricycle Relays are held on campus annually.
Students, faculty and the community race around the clock tower for prizes.
