Tracking Metrics, Identifying Impact • Developing a tool to identify impact of campus activities on: – – – – – – – – Volunteerism Service Learning Teaching and Research Business and Economic Development Special Projects Fundraising Efforts Alumni Involvement Campus Success Stories • Utilize metrics to provide statistical (year over year) data • Identify service gaps and develop partnerships to fill those areas • Provide this information to community and elected officials to generate support Service Learning and Community Engagement have a Huge Impact…and are Growing • UNCW students, faculty and staff participated in community service activities at more than 1,532 community sites in academic year 2010-2011. • UNCW students provided more than 7,015 credit hours to the community through their service-learning courses, totaling 87,687.5 clock hours. In regard to faculty service, there were 259 faculty reporting, representing 41 departments, who contributed 19,531 hours of service to over 600 local, regional, state, and national organizations . Impressively, faculty held 238 leadership positions (e.g. Board member, president, etc.) in the varied organizations. UNCW received in 2008 the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification in the category of Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships The Feast Down East program (UNCW is the leading agent) in partnership with the Burgaw Incubator Kitchen received the Governor’s Innovative Small Business Community Award in November 2011 This year, Community Partnerships and Student Affairs developed the First Year Commitment to Service Program for incoming freshmen beginning in Fall 2012. Already, student data shows: – – – – – Student Participants: 510 Number of Service Hours: 2,642 Economic Impact: $49,670 % of Freshman Class: 25% Projects included: Stop Hunger Now, Halloween Carnival, Community Service programs sponsored by my office, First Year Seminar EDGE students, etc. Where is UNCW Making an Impact? • • Teaching, Research, Service - Education and Social Services – 301 EDN Internships and Practicums – 124 Partnerships with Social Service organizations Business & Economic Development – Entrepreneurship Center – Swain Center for Economic & Business Services and Professional & Continuing Education – MARBIONC Through the documented partnerships created during the 2010-2011 academic year, faculty, staff and students have become engaged in the local, statewide, national and global community, giving more than 178,555 hours of service through the 714 documented partnerships. According to the national rate for volunteer service, the value of the UNCW volunteer time is $3.89 million.
