Service Learning and Community Engagement
have a Huge Impact…and are Growing
• UNCW students, faculty and staff participated in community service
activities at more than 1,532 community sites in academic year
2010-2011.
• UNCW students provided more than 7,015 credit hours to the
community through their service-learning courses, totaling 87,687.5
clock hours. The economic impact of this service totals $1,910,710.60
(based on the accepted national volunteer rate of $21.79 per hour).
• Nearly half of UNCW’s 13,000 students and 259 faculty provided some
type of service through service learning, community service and civic
engagement, the total economic impact of which approaches
$1,980,013.72.

UNCW has more than 100 programs and services with a community outreach focus.
In regard to faculty service, there were 259 faculty reporting, representing 41 departments,
who contributed 19,531 hours of service to over 600 local, regional, state, and national
organizations . Impressively, faculty held 238 leadership positions (e.g. Board member,
president, etc.) in the varied organizations.
UNCW received in 2008 the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification in the category of
Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships
The Feast Down East program (UNCW is the leading agent) in partnership with the Burgaw
Incubator Kitchen received the Governor’s Innovative Small Business Community Award in
November 2011
This year, Community Partnerships and Student Affairs developed the First Year Commitment
to Service Program for incoming freshmen beginning in Fall 2012. Already, student data shows:

Projects included: Stop Hunger Now, Halloween Carnival, Community Service programs

Through the documented partnerships created during the 2010-2011 academic year, faculty, staff
and students have become engaged in the local, statewide, national and global community, giving
more than 178,555 hours of service through the 714 documented partnerships.
According to the national rate for volunteer service, the value of the UNCW volunteer time is $3.89
million.
