CROSSROADS, UNCW’s Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Program, is dedicated to creating
a healthier environment regarding alcohol and drug use and the advancement of thoughtful and
healthy decision-making through a positive, non-judgmental message.
2015-2016 Peer Educator Positions
CROSSROADS Peer Educators promote substance abuse prevention on campus through
educational programming, service, and outreach efforts of CROSSROADS. Peer Educators
develop and execute ideas for campus events and educational programs on alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs. They also facilitate presentations to freshman seminar (UNI) classes,
Health 105 classes, and student organizations. They are expected to attend CROSSROADS
events, actively educate other students, and develop a thorough working knowledge of
alcohol and drug issues after training. Peer Educators work 8-10 hours each week. Both paid
and volunteer positions are available.
Skills gained through this position include:
 Oral & Written Communication Skills: public speaking, facilitating group discussion
 Interpersonal Skills: empathy and active listening, respect for diverse points of view
 Teamwork Skills: collaboration, conflict resolution
 Initiative: creativity, advocacy
 Analytical Skills: problem solving, organization, program planning
 Leadership Skills: motivating others, peer helping and referral skills
All CROSSROADS Peers are expected to:
 Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
 Maintain good academic and disciplinary standing with the University
 Attend training on August 13th & 17th and additional dates to be scheduled
 Attend weekly group meeting and CROSSROADS events
 Possess a commitment to the concept of substance abuse prevention
 Act as a positive and responsible role model to all UNCW students
 Develop leadership abilities that will facilitate working with educators, students and
other peers
 Have a positive outlook with a willingness to face new experiences while maintaining
an open mind to others’ lifestyle choices
College Mentors
College Mentors work with the CROSSROADS Pre-College program to deliver our drug abuse
prevention program in local middle and high schools and community agencies. Mentors are
required to have their own transportation. If you are interested in applying for a College
